A football school? Isn’t that what the University of Oklahoma is supposed to be? Isn’t that what everybody says? Isn’t it?

But keep that hush-hush. And don’t anybody tell Kelvin Sampson’s basketball team, which is coming off an appearance in the Final Four.

The basketball Sooners are the two-time defending Big 12 tournament champions. They’re averaging 28 victories over the last three seasons. They’ve won 20 games or more for five consecutive years, and they’ve been to eight straight NCAA Tournaments.

Smell that? That’s the scent of big-time. And it sure ain’t pigskin.

“We didn’t all of a sudden get good last year,” Sampson said. “But the Final Four was like rocket fuel for our program. It launched us.”

Indeed it did. Right into the national recruiting elite. Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, UCLA, Maryland, Florida — and Oklahoma?
