To wit, neither team has the sufficient depth of talent at this point to challenge the powerhouses in the Big East. This problem is particularly perplexing in light of the fact that New Jersey is a great state for high school talent and that both New York and Philadelphia are within the immediate region.
In my experience, a lot of the kids from the area feel trapped and want to experience college life elsewhere. The high population densities and rugged conditions of the area make recruiting for the instate schools more difficult than it might appear.
I also believe that the fanbases sometimes become overly fixated on elite players when the attention should be given to landing those players ranked in the top 50-100. Those are the guys you can build around, and the extent to which those programs can do that will determine how quickly they can make a strong move upward.
As an addendum, it's worth noting that guys like Greg Echenique and Mike Rosario were both outstanding pickups for the Scarlet Knights and, in fact, are even better than what may be necessary.
