Brick Says....

He’s our present choice as the premier prospect in the senior class, as he’s clearly better now than fellow Georgia big man Kwame Brown (who went directly to the NBA from high school as the No. 1 overall draft pick) was at the conclusion of his senior year! Howard has grown steadily into a much stronger than he looks 235-pound specimen, and we anticipate that his strength will continue to increase during the next several years. But what this special player has that other big men don’t is a rare combination of superb run/jump athleticism, quick and virtually impossible-to-stop spin moves from the low post, the ability to score ambidextrously via soft jump hooks and finger-rolls with either hand, sure hands that catch everything they touch, and a cool court demeanor. He dunks rebounds, blocks an enormous number of shots, sprints up and down the court, and simply intimidates opponents, yet in a pleasant way. He also passes skillfully and hits some jump shots to 15 feet, although the latter is one area of his game that could stand more honing. Near-super plus prospect will be watched by pro scouts all year long.

Event Performances

2003 ABCD Camp: When Dwight Howard came flying down the lane to slam home an offensive rebound opening night, it marked the beginning of what would evolve into a fabulous summer for the 6-10 prodigy. Howard did it all at ABCD, and he did most of it multiple times. The 235-pound big man from Atlanta (GA) Southwest Atlanta Christian was the consummate man among boys; he dunked, swatted shots, scored on spin moves in the post, ripped down tough rebounds, made alert passes and managed to accomplish all that while playing within the team concept.

2002 Tournament of Champions: Howard broke out at the TOC as one of the better young big men in a class that's loaded with them. He has broad shoulders, runs the floor well and is pretty quick inside the paint. Intriguingly, he also has advanced ball-handling skills and can attack the basket from the perimeter. He does tend to over-penetrate and get the ball stolen by guards, but in time he should learn to make better decisions and find the right balance to his offensive game.
