Brick's EvalThis versatile native Californian transferred this fall to the Sunshine State and rescinded an early verbal commitment to Texas, to the Longhorns' dismay. We watched him at several events and were impressed by his accomplished perimeter skills for someone his size, as well as by his considerable athleticism. He handles quite proficiently for his height, effectively driving past most frontcourt opponents, and he also is a dangerous jump shooter (stationary or on the move) from mid-range to beyond the arc, even though his shot form is less than exemplary. His rebounding and defense are both acceptable, though not outstanding at this juncture. The high big-time prospect is among the few elite prospects who haven't yet reached a college decision. Fall 2010 Update: Daniels shocked many observers by backing off his commitment to Texas. One of UT's lynchpins in the Class of 2011, he opted to reopen his recruitment and left Woodland Hills (CA) Taft in favor of IMG for his senior year. Accordingly, he didn't sign during the fall period and is in the process of formulating a new list. Daniels' prospect ranking holds steady in the top 25, and he'll sign during the spring. Event PerformancesPangos (6/10): DeAndre Daniels got hot on the perimeter and buried numerous jump shots in his continuing evolution toward becoming a full-time wing. The Woodland Hills (CA) Taft product doesn't have textbook form but is a rhythm scorer, and if you allow him to get into his flow he'll start taking (and making) shot after shot. He didn't put the ball on the floor much early on but has that capabilty as well, though we still want to see him handle a little more fluently. Daniels had a big summer of 2009 and carried that momentum into his junior season, and now this prior Texas pledge remains focused on a big push on the travel circuit and beyond. Pangos (6/09): DeAndre Daniels helped himself more than just about anyone at the Pangos All-American Camp. Daniels, a 6-7 junior WF/BF at Woodland Hills (CA) Taft, was outstanding at the event, showcasing outstanding length and athleticism. Daniels got better as the event wore along, and now he projects as one of the better forward prospects in the Class of 2011. Thought more of a big forward offensively, he has the quick feet to potentially play the wing in college. All that said, his journey hasn't been entirely easy, as he left La Canada (CA) Renaissance for Taft last season but sat out due to transfer rules. Thus, the summer period will be the first time a lot of coaches have watched him play in the past year. That said, certain schools didn't forget about him during his temporary hoops exile. "I've got USC, Arizona State, Washington, UNLV, Texas, Wake Forest, Rhode Island, Gonzaga and Iowa State," he said. "The offers are USC, UNLV, UT and Rhode Island." Though there may be some uncertainty among scouts as to his college position, Daniels said that his suitors are pursuing him as a wing forward. He added that he may play with either California Supreme or the Nashville Celtics (his father knows Celtics brass) during July. "It's too early for me to get too serious," he said, "but the main thing will be to start and hopefully get my minutes." Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions: (5/08) This transfer from La Canada (CA) Renaissance is headed to Tennessee next year. Though he was quiet during the games we watched, he appears to possess both good athleticism and OK shooting stroke. He'll need strength and more production at some point, but for now, he's worth monitoring at the high-major level. PrepStars.com Staff, www.PrepStars.com |
