REYNOLDS MAKES IT OFFICIAL

By Thom Jones

December 7, 2001

After making a commitment several weeks ago, J.R. Reynolds finally made public his pledge to the University of Virginia. The original announcement was scheduled for September 11, but was pushed back in the aftermath of the nation's terrorist attacks.

Reynolds, a 6-3, 185-pound junior from Roanoke (VA) Catholic, is a strong, physical guard who has fine offensive versatility. He grew two inches in the last year and his body has matured and filled out; the added strength is making him a tough match-up defensively.

J.R. himself readily acknowledges that growth aspect while stating what he thinks he brings to the table.

"I think the strength of my game is the ability to penetrate and get others involved in the game. I feel I can play both guard spots, but consider myself a point guard. I was 6-1 last year and am 6-3 now."

Reynolds will rank among the elite prospects in the Class of 2003. He shoots the ball very well from the perimeter -- especially from the corners -- and also has a nice mid-range game. And with his ability to use his strength on dribble penetration, he's able to finish his forays into the paint. Defense is the area that will require the most improvement.

Reynolds played AAU ball during the summer with the Roanoke Jaguars. As a sophomore, he averaged 20.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 5.7 assists to help Roanoke Catholic to a State Catholic and Independent School Division II title.
