OAK HILL REPEATS IN HOUSTON HOUSTON -- For about 26 minutes on Monday night, it appeared that Oak Hill Academy would lose its first game at a Holiday tournament since 1995. The Warriors had been battered and simply out-played by a very focused St. Pat's squad from New Jersey. But during those fateful few minutes, after a controversy over scoring disrupted St. Pat's flow, the nation's most touted high school program regained stride and pressed St. Pat's into submission, winning the National Division of the Academy National Invitational 62-59. more....
WHITE MAKES STATEMENT AT SLAM While one Alabama junior showed he might be ranked too high, another actually may be rated too low. Wilcox Central's Mike Williams came away without a single rebound in the first half on Saturday and showed a limited offensive game. D.J. White, meanwhile, played his usual all-around game and led Hillcrest to a victory over Villanova-bound senior forward Will Sheridan. more....
AT SLAM DUNK: SCHOOL LISTS LEWES, Del. -- Here are some school lists, taken straight from the players' mouths, from the Slam Dunk to the Beach. St. Benedict's (N.J.) junior swingman J.R. Smith was taking in the day's action while wearing a North Carolina No. 23 jersey in honor of his favorite player, Michael Jordan. Smith has the Tar Heels atop his list, which also includes Louisville, Pittsburgh, Villanova and N.C. State. more....
PADGETT A BEAST AT SLAM DUNK LEWES, Del. -- It was billed as a matchup between one of the top big men from the senior class against one of the elite from the loaded Class of 2004. But David Padgett had a second consecutive standout performance as he led his Reno (Nev.) squad to a 71-54 victory over Randolph Morris and Landmark Christian Academy (Ga.). more....
AT THE ANI: BIG NAMES CATCH FIRE HOUSTON -- In case it wasn't obvious in our coverage from Day One of the Academy National Invitational, the overriding theme was that many of the top players in attendance didn't live up to their reputations. But while a few players still haven't gotten on track, Saturday featured a return to form for the most touted players at the tournament. Von Wafer, Rodrick Stewart, Ivan Harris and others stole the spotlight on Day Two. more....
"I'M HEARING THE MOST RIGHT NOW FROM FLORIDA, INDIANA, DUKE AND NORTH
CAROLINA." - Mike Williams
LIDONDE HEATS UP AT SLAM LEWES, Del. -- Abdi Lidonde nailed seven trifectas against St. Patrick (N.J.) one week ago in a disappointing overtime loss. The unsigned St. Andrews (R.I.) senior matched the seven treys Friday night, but this time it came in a win. Lidonde was unconscious from both wings to help give St. Andrews a 76-56 victory over a mammoth Laurinburg Institute (N.C.) team at the Slam Dunk to the Beach. more....
DENG, KOUNDJIA LIGHT UP GLAXO RALEIGH, N.C. -- The 31st annual GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational, which kicked off on Friday at N.C. State, there was a little bit of something for all basketball fans. For starters, there was the near triple double posted by junior guard Marquie Cooke. Then there was the showcase of future ACC players DeMarcus Nelson and Cedric Simmons. Finally, there was a head to head showdown between senior wing forwards Luol Deng and Regis Koundjia. more....
RICE HOLDS OFF WESTCHESTER HOUSTON -- After storming to the title in convincing fashion at the City of Palms Classic, Manhattan Rice entered this weekend's Academy National Invitational as one of the tournament favorites. And in a West Coast vs. East Coast slugfest on Friday night, Rice built an early lead, fell behind, then rallied late to topple previously undefeated Los Angeles (CA) Westchester 52-51. Rice received another outstanding game from 7-3 C Shagari Alleyne. more....

PRICE IS RIGHT AT SLAM Last year it was Villanova freshman Jason Fraser who was one of the marquee names at the Slam Dunk to the Beach. Now itís his former Amityville teammate, A.J. Price, who has stepped into the limelight. Price scored 30 points and overshadowed fellow junior guard, Courtney Nelson, as Amityville defeated Bloomfield Tech, 72-63, on Thursday. more....
WILLIAMS NOT QUITE ENOUGH LILBURN, Ga. -- Santa came a little early to Gwinnett County (GA) this year. He flew over Berkmar High School on Friday night and delivered an early present to hoop fans when the third-ranked Patriots and seventh-ranked South Gwinnett faced off in a heavyweight bout. With more than a half dozen Division 1 prospects on the floor, including Berkmar's top-100 senior Matt Causey and Gwinnett's top-10 sophomore Louis Williams. more....
ROBINSON SCORCHES MATER DEI FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Russell Robinson had already made his point. The 6-3 junior was key for Manhattan (NY) Rice on Friday night in the quarterfinal round, answering any doubts that he's a high-major prospect in the Class of 2004. But Robinson wasn't ready to stop there, not with a match against powerful Mater Dei looming in the semifinal. Robinson caught fire early against Mater Dei and never cooled off. He scored a tournament-high 42 points on 10-15 shooting, including 4-6 on threes -- that's a whole lot of points for just 15 shot attempts. more....
FOR ST. PAT'S, CARACTER IS A VIRTUE FORT MYERS, Fla. -- One high school game, one baby step taken toward greatness for a player who still sports baby fat. That's Derrick Caracter to you, and if you think that the headline of this story is trite, then just wait until he takes his act to the big-time and he makes headlines on a nightly basis. And big-time basketball is, without question, where he'll end up. Caracter, a 6-8, 280-pound freshman monster at Elizabeth (NJ) St. Patrick, played his first high school basketball game on Friday at the City of Palms Classic. more....
I'M WILLING TO WORK AND EARN MY SPOT ON THE TEAM. - Barry Gardner
AGNEW PROVIDES LARGE PRESENCE It is hard not to notice Aaron Agnew on the floor during his games. At 6-10 and 360 pounds, his presence is undeniable, but don't make the mistake of jumping to any conclusions about him he is a skilled player. more....
GUARD COMES OUT OF WOODWORK FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Of all the players you'd expect to lead off our coverage of the prestigious City of Palms Classic, Mike Woodard certainly wouldn't be that guy. In fact, most people -- including us -- knew virtually nothing about Woodard heading into the City of Palms. But Woodard's inspiring performance on Thursday night left very little remaining guesswork about his game. The 5-11 PG at Fairburn (GA) Creekside scored just 10 points against Washington (DC) Dunbar, but his domination of the game -- resulting in an easy 75-52 victory -- extended far beyond the stat sheet. more....
I AM HEARING ALMOST DAILY FROM N.C. STATE.... - Isaac Wells
HABLE MAY BE RE-CLASSIFIED His academic class remains somewhat uncertain, but Jerome Habel's play on the court this season is ringing loud and clear. Habel, a 6-9, 205-pound BF at Bethesda (MD) Walt Whitman, is scoring 18 points and blocking four shots per game in his team's 4-0 start. Though Habel is a senior this year, he has decided to take a fifth year to catch up with his classmates in age (he doesn't turn 17 until the end of December) and elevate his recruitment. more....
ROUNDUP: MILFORD CLOSES The Milford Academy (CT) boys basketball program has come to an abrupt end after coach Bob Riggio's efforts to keep the team alive were unsuccessful due to finances. "They dropped the program and told the kids to go elsewhere," Riggio said. "I've been trying to put something together so we can help these kids graduate but it's not going to happen." more....
WADE BIG-TIME IN 2003 OR 2004 Lorenzo Wade appears destined for the big-time college level based on his athleticism, fluid floor game and competent perimeter stroke. But academics may prevent Wade from reaching that level next fall, so he may end up in prep school next year and join the Class of 2004. Whenever he signs, Wade almost certainly will ink with a major program. more....
HARPER STILL LEANING, BUT OPEN Justin Harper made a fall commitment to Winthrop, but he didn't sign a letter of intent and is starting to see his college decision cloud up. Harper, a 6-4,185-pound PG from Catawba (NC) Bandys, just finished up his season on the gridiron. For Harper, that means closing the book on football (he caught 18 touchdowns this season from his wide receiver position) and making the transition to basketball, which starts on Friday. more....
"RIGHT NOW, OLE MISS IS THE LEADER." - Isaac Wells
HERITAGE DROPS GAMES WITHOUT JONES It was no coincidence that Heritage Christian (Texas) lost all three of its games last week in Washington, D.C., with Tyler Jones watching from the bench. The 6-8, 215-pound Jones, who is averaging 16 points and 13 boards per game, wasn't allowed to play because the tournament didn't allow fifth-year seniors to participate. more....
ABRAHAM PUTTING UP DOUBLE DOUBLES The traditionally strong basketball program at Middleburg (VA) Notre Dame Academy has gotten off to another quick start this year, coming out of the gate undefeated in their first six games. A large contributor -- but perhaps not as large in the past -- has been Dennard Abraham, who has trimmed down his weight and bulked up his game. more.... Here's the first update of our top 25 high school poll. Not surprisingly, LeBron James and his Akron (OH) St. Vincent-St. Mary mates' dominance last week over Oak Hill Academy propelled them to the top spot. Two things about the teams in the poll really stand out.... more....
"I PLAN ON HAVING A DECISION SOMETIME AFTER THE BASKETBALL SEASON." - Daniel Gibson
MORRIS AN ELITE JUNIOR BIG MAN Some guys simply play the game of basketball. Others, however, really know how to play the game of basketball. If supremely talented 6-10 junior center Randolph Morris continues at his current rate, he'll maintain his place among the national elite and become one of the most sought-after prospects from the Class of 2004. more....
"I WANT TO GO SOMEWHERE ... AND HAVE A CHANCE TO GET PLAYING TIME." - Jimmy Tobias
JUNIOR COLLEGE PROFILE: ALLEGANY ALLEGANY, Md. -- This year is shaping up to be another good one for Allegany (MD) Community College. Located in the foothills in western Maryland, the junior college powerhouse is coming off consecutive appearances at the juco national tournament and boasts yet another strong team this season. The squad currently is ranked No. 14 nationally and we caught an Allegany win over Catonsville late last week. Be assured that you'll be hearing more from these prospects when juco recruiting really heats up in the spring. more....
OXON HILL GUARD ON THE RISE Rashaud Nixon played in the shadow of Chris Williams last year at Oxon Hill (Md.) and let the game come to him. Now the 6-4 senior has become more aggressive and plans to show coaches that he's a different player this season. Nixon, who is one of four guards starting in Oxon Hill's quick lineup, is versatile but will be a two-guard at the next level. Not only has he become more aggressive on the court, but he's also added about 10 pounds in the past year and is up to about 180. more....
AT THE HOOPS FEST: HAMMOND RULES FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Marcus Hammond helped himself at the Holiday Hoops Festival. The unsigned 6-2 senior WG scored 21 points against a very tough Tulsa (OK) Booker T. Washington squad and continues to position himself as a sought-after guard in the spring. But Hammond did more than help himself. He took charge of his team's scoring, passing, defense and ball-handling, leading East to a 47-39 victory over Washington and the 2002 Hoops Festival championship. more....
RODRICK RULES THE KMOX ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- On a night when his team, and his struggling twin brother Lodrick, needed him the most, Rodrick Stewart answered the bell again and again. Locked in an exciting duel with surprising junior PG Justin Cerasoli, Stewart came up with all the big plays and wowed the crowed at the St. Louis Savvis Center. After struggling through a borderline abysmal first half marred by turnovers and missed jump shots, Rod rallied to finish with 28 points, four assists, eight boards and three steals on a variety of slick spin moves, tough finishes in the paint and lob passes. more....
BY GEORGE, HE'S A CYCLONE Reggie George just wanted to make sure that Iowa State's interest was serious and when he saw the coaching staff made the trip all the way to Delaware last month, that was enough to convince the Illinois native that the Cyclones really wanted him. more....
COBBS ON THE RISE Overcoming the affects of a potentially debilitating injury is a difficult endeavor. Initially, an injured prospect must prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is completely healthy. He must then quickly regain the form he displayed prior to the injury. Underrated 6-5 WG Richard Cobbs of Moreno Valley (CA) Canyon Springs High School has successfully cleared the first hurdle and is looking forward to the second. more....
PROWITT STARTS FAST McLean (VA) Potomac School junior Peter Prowitt has gotten off to a strong start in his team's first three games, but basketball is only part of the equation for this elite 6-10, 255-pound center. "I would really like to find a school where I can grow as a person and as a student," Prowitt told PrepStars.com. "I want to go somewhere that I can expand my horizons in all areas of life, in addition to basketball." more....

"I REALLY LIKE (OHIO STATE) A LOT." - Justin Cerasoli
LEE ON HIS WAY TO STARDOM Roosevelt Lee and Jamual Warren get along pretty well, probably because they can relate to one another's situation. Both Lee and Warren have ended up at Milford Academy (Conn.) and have re-classified as juniors after struggling in the classroom for most of their high school careers. And both players, especially Lee, have played very well so far this season and project as clear high-major targets. more....
FORMER RIVALS MAKE PEACE Richard Roby and Sylvester Seay didn't like one another a few years back. Actually, they flat-out hated each other. Now the Groton (MA) Lawrence Academy juniors have become best friends ever since playing on the same Inland AAU team for Elvert "Kool Aid" Perry in California. more....
WARREN LIKELY ON THE MOVE Jamual Warren is finally happy somewhere, but now he's probably going to be forced to leave. The 6-1, 190-pound WG/PG, who has bounced around to at least four schools in his prep career, has played for Milford Academy (Conn.) coach Bob Riggio this season. However, the school is scheduled to close down after this semester, which will likely send the players scurrying to other schools. more....
DUBOIS LOOKING FOR REPEAT Led by Rutgers-bound center Shagari Alleyne, Manhattan (NY) Rice has taken aim this season of repeating last year's New York Catholic School League Championship. Alleyne will receive significant help along the front line from Arturo Dubois, a 6-7, 230-pound junior BF who puts the power in power forward. Dubois had a very impressive club tour this spring and summer, and his name has now popped up on numerous recruiting lists. more....
"I REALLY LIKE RICHMOND. ..." - Steve Castleberry
LAURIE, KICKAPOO DEFEND TURF SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- As might be expected from a team featuring three Division I recruits in its starting lineup, Springfield (MO) Kickapoo is a formidable opponent. And the Chiefs got an early test Saturday night against Fayetteville (AR) High for the championship of their Tip-Off Classic. Kickapoo's biggest name is Missouri-bound guard Spencer Laurie, while Fayetteville's star is Arkansas signee Ronnie Brewer. more....

Take a look at all the movement in this week's poll. At the top is a familiar name: Blairstown (NJ) Blair Academy. Blair, of course, is led by top-10 prospects Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva. more....

CARR DRIVES SOUTH TO MT. ZION After averaging 24 points, six rebounds and seven assists last year at Philadelphia (PA) University City, Tasheed Carr decided that a move was in his best interests and relocated south to Durham (NC) Mt. Zion Christian, where he also re-classified to junior status. more....
HOUSTON GUARD ON GIMPY ANKLE During his sophomore season last year at League City (TX) Clear Creek, Daylan Allen missed over three weeks with a right ankle sprain that hampered his play. Then, after coming out of the gate strong in his team's first two games this season, the talented junior re-injured the right ankle and has missed the last two weeks and 6 games total, while still being another two weeks away from returning to the court. more....
COUISNARD STEPS INTO LIMELIGHT While playing for the Houston Hoops last summer, it was easy to see that P.J. Couisnard had some talent. The 6-3 combo guard from Houston (TX) Yates demonstrated an ability to get to the rim and knock down open jumpers. However, playing with the likes of Tack Minor, Ndi Ebi and junior Daniel Gibson, there weren't many shots to go around. And Couisnard also found himself out of position. more....
MALLOY TAKES ALTERNATE ROUTE Shawn Malloy spent a very busy spring and summer waffling between several schools, before ending up in at a junior college that wasn't part of the original plan. "Butler recruited me out of high school so I knew about them, but I basically flew in and started school and it was the first time that I got to see the place," Malloy told PrepStars.com, referring to Butler JC in El Dorado (KS). more....
"HE CAN DEFINITELY PLAY IN THE ATLANTIC-10, IF NOT HIGHER." - Coach Mike Byrnes, on Donovan Morris

"My goal this year is going to the States and winning the championship," Grimes told PrepStars.com. "As for me individually, I plan on averaging 20 points and getting over 10 rebounds a game." more....
MINTER WORKING HARD AT FUMA Fork Union Academy Coach Fletcher Arritt may not have a ton of big names this season, but Donte Minter is attracting plenty of interest. The 6-8, 235-pound big forward, who averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds per game at West Rowan (NC) High last season, is averaging 20 points per game over the team's first six games all wins this season. more....

"I'M THINKING ABOUT COMMITTING WITHIN A MONTH." - Linas Kleiza
JUNIOR PREVIEW: RALPH MIMS It's not often that Maine produces big-time college prospects. Nik Caner-Medley came from Deering High and is currently a freshman at Maryland. You can bank on the fact that the next will be Brunswick (Maine) junior guard Ralph Mims. The 6-2, 205-pound Mims spent most of his childhood in Pensacola, Fla., but moved to Maine in 1999 when his father, who is in the Navy, received orders to be stationed in Maine. more....
"MY FIRST CHOICE IS RUTGERS." - Mbainai "Roman" Narmbaye
BRONSON A NEW, IMPROVED MAN Charles Bronson is a different person than he was a couple years ago. Literally. The 6-9, 220-pound senior at Philadelphia (PA) Lutheran Christian weighed more than 325 pounds two years ago, but he finally put down the video game controller and decided to hit the gym. Bronson has dropped more than 100 pounds and the results are starting to show in his game. more....
COOK CLIMBING RECRUITING CHARTS Mike Cook was supposed to go to Providence a year ago, but his academics weren't up to par and his scholarship was given away. But the 6-3 Philadelphia native will have plenty of options if he keeps playing like he has early on this season at New Hampton (N.H.) Cook has been a scoring machine for Jamie Arsenault's club so far. He had more than 30 points in his first 3 games at last weekend's War on the Shore and finished with 18 in a loss to Notre Dame Prep. more....
DAHI'S STOCK ON THE RISE Arnaud Dahi just can't explain it. He knows he played well this past summer, yet the scholarship offers just never came. The 6-7, 215-pound senior wing from Burlington (NJ) Life Center Academy has a game built on aggressiveness. He feeds off his defensive play and goes hard on both ends of the court. Sometimes he takes too many chances on the defensive end and his decision-making could improve, but it's not for a lack of effort. more....
"MOST EVERYBODY IS WAITING." - Marcus Sikes
DOWELL COMMITS EARLY TO TEXAS Not only does Texas boast one of the nation's best college teams this year, but the Longhorns also aren't wasting time in taking advantage of that success in recruiting. Though the top junior target remains top-10 Houston guard Daniel Gibson, UT has locked up a different 2004 in-state prospect -- this one less touted but possibly very underrated -- in Dion Dowell. more....
ELLIOTT ONE TO WATCH THIS WINTER After coming up just short of qualifying on the SAT last spring, Carl Elliott's route to Division I basketball has taken a detour. The 6-3 WG/PG, a strong backcourt player who signed with George Washington last spring, is playing a for Worcester (MA) Academy as a fifth-year prep this season. Elliott is a strong guard who can play either spot in the backcourt. He's a good passer in transition and has the strength to overcome smaller defenders and score on drives. more....
HURT HOPING TO REVIVE REP Not too long ago, Texas point guard Carlos Hurt established himself as one of the most sought-after prospects around. The 6-2 PG was selected to play in the 2001 McDonald's All-American game, but he's yet to fulfill that promise in college. But even now, after an injury-shortened and suspension-highlighted career at Louisville and subsequent transfer to junior college ball at Wabash Valley (IL) JC, Hurt is still garnering attention, albeit from somewhat less than household names. more....
"I'M NOT REALLY OPEN, BUT I THINK I MAY HAVE COMMITTED TOO EARLY." - Cheyenne Moore
TWO LEAD FOR LIGON Brian Ligon admittedly is finding his head spinning with all the calls and contacts with schools during the fall and has decided to wait until spring before making a decision. The Florida forward had a favorite school in the Big East and made an unofficial visit, but they did not extend an offer. He's now focusing on a pair of programs closer to home. more....
AT THE WAR: JOHNSON HEATS UP MILFORD, Del. -- Okay, so after nearly a year of uncertainty, it's safe to say that Alexander Johnson won't be going to the University of Georgia. And that fact caught the interest of a lot of courtside viewers on Saturday night at the War on the Shore Invitational. LSU-bound forward Regis Koundjia also played very well, even if coaches could only drool at the prospect of having him for them next season. more....
AT THE WAR: DENG DELIVERS MILFORD, Del. -- The NBA scouts didn't show up Friday night to watch Luol Deng. Representatives from roughly six NBA squads were there primarily to see Deng's teammate at Blairstown (NJ) Blair Academy, Charlie Villanueva. But after a dominating performance by Deng, many of those in attendance -- scouts, media, fans and otherwise -- left Milford High chatting him up as the best player to hit the hardwood on opening night. more....

TOP 20 FALL RECRUITING CLASSES Now that the fall signing period has passed, it's time to take a definitive look at this year's most successful recruiting classes. At the top of this year's rankings, there's a newcomer to the national elite -- Illinois. Along with Richard McBride and others, the Illini are riding high. more....
ROUNDUP: GUARD PICKS GOPHERS It took long enough, but Wesley Washington finally did sign with Minnesota. Washington's recruiting saga didn't follow the conventional course. The 6-2 WG from Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei, an outstanding driver and mid-range shooter who was outstanding at this summer's Nike Camp, actually committed to California several months ago. more....
PIGFORD FITTING IN AT LON MORRIS After starting his career at Virginia Tech, 6-7 BF/WF C.J. Pigford decided to transfer across the country to Lon Morris (TX) JC, a nationally-ranked juco powerhouse, where the sophomore will anchor a formidable front line. Strong and athletic, Pigford has been forced to blend into a team that features two more touted performers, but his solid play already is attracting a nice mix of schools. more....
DAVIDSON STOPS SMITH, MCEACHERN MARIETTA, Ga. -- Despite heading into the season as the defending 5A state champions, famed Marietta (GA) Wheeler found itself the underdog in Tuesday's game against a new Georgia powerhouse, Power Springs (GA) McEachern, which features top-10 junior Josh Smith. However, Wheeler big man Jermareo Davidson was up to the challenge, leading Wheeler past a loaded McEachern squad that should be one of Georgia's best. more....

JUNIOR PREVIEW: ANTWAN HARRIS Antwan Harris, a 6-3 WF from Clarksville (TN) Kenwood, has been doing his best impression of another Clarksville native on hardwood courts of middle Tennessee lately. "Whether it is his game or even his looks, Antwan mirrors [Phoenix Suns forward] Shawn Marion greatly," Harris' AAU Coach, Jeremy Shulman, said. "Antwan is simply a great player who knows how to play the game and make great things happen on the court." more....
GORE SHAKING OFF RUST Arnold Gore just finished his football season as a defensive end at White Castle (LA) High, and while he thoroughly enjoys football, he believes his future is in basketball. "I like football, but I'm going to play basketball in college." more....

KINDRED'S SPIRIT SOARS AT JUCO California combo guard Keion Kindred is similar to a lot of the kids who wind up logging a year or two in the juco ranks. Enter Yaba Pai, located in Arizona, and the juco school’s swashbuckling head coach Brooks Thompson. more....

MOLIVA A TOUGH INSIDER Gaston Moliva is an unusual forward. He stands 6-7 and tips the scales at almost 240 pounds, but the Norfolk (VA) Ryan Academy senior also has some driving ability and shooting range. He averaged 16 points per game last season at Ryan. ``Most of the time, he’s forced to play out of position," Ryan coach Bob Mackey told PrepStars.com. "He played the four and five all summer for Boo Williams because he’s so strong and athletic. more....

It is a chance to start and get a lot of (playing) time." more....
INGRAM A STRONG MID-MAJOR After a spring and summer that saw him split his time between both the 16 and 17-under teams with Richmond Metro AAU, Andre Ingram is gearing up for what should be a very good senior season at Richmond (VA) Highland Springs. "That might be the reason that I'm not seeing more interest from schools, not being out more this summer." more....

JACKSON ONE TO WATCH FOR SPRING A quick look at the programs involved with 6-1 Monroe (LA) Parish point guard Jay Jackson reveals one obvious fact- there’s a healthy dose of local flavor. ROUNDUP: PAUL DOMINATES SCRIMMAGE As if anyone needed the refresher, Chris Paul didn't need much time to remind everyone why he's one of the nation's very best point guards. Paul, a 6-0 Wake Forest-bound star at Clemmons (NC) West Forsyth, dominated a weekend scrimmage against talented Greensboro (NC) Dudley. Not only did Paul control nearly every aspect of the scrimmage, he did so without seeming to exert too much effort. more....
VAREM'S RECRUITMENT HEATING UP Hybrids like Vincennes (IN) JC standout Jeff Varem defy classifications when it comes to position. Actually, the only label players like Varem seek is one of big-time hoopster. Constructed better than some sheds at a stout 6-5, 230 pounds, the Nigeria-born juco star is capable of punishing foes around the cup. However, Varem is also agile and skilled enough to defend on the perimeter or even provide spot duty in the backcourt. more....
THIN THIAM MAKING NOISE One look at Babacar Thiam and you quickly want to treat him to dinner. At 6-7 and only 175 pounds, Thiam definitely doesn't inspire much confidence that he can physically compete with other college-bound players. But once the ball goes in the air, Thiam's aggressive offensive attitude belies his lack of strength. more....
"MY FAVORITE SCHOOL WOULD BE MEMPHIS." - Josh Peppers
MARTIN PICKS WILDCATS Cartier Martin waffled for weeks between Oklahoma State, Kentucky Kansas State, Texas and Oklahoma, so the talented senior's decision comes as a hard-fought and long-awaited victory for his college choice, the KSU Wildcats. Martin, a 6-7 WF from Houston (TX) Nimitz, is a very talented slasher who brings good athleticism and scoring ability from the wing. He may not be a great jump shooter, but Martin has a quick first step, tricky dribble moves and the size and springs to finish inside. more....
DALE HAPPY TO BE BACK IN ACTION When Belleville (IL) East conducts its first official practice on Monday, 6-5 WG Mike Dale will be a happy guy. Like his teammates, he'll probably hate the running and might even have to consult a nearby trash can, but you can bet that he'll appreciate just being there. That's because Dale, after several promising spring outings with the St. Louis Eagles, found himself fighting for more than a scholarship this summer. more....
"ACTUALLY, INDIANA IS MY LEADER RIGHT NOW." - Maurice Shaw
NASH THINKING ABOUT TWO Living in Hawaii certainly has plenty of benefits. Great weather, great scenery and plenty of things to do. However, it isn't necessarily the easiest place to get noticed by mainland schools if you're a prep basketball star. Because of the small population, there just aren't as many legitimate prospects, so coaches have a tendency to question Island prospects until they prove their worth against mainland competition. more....
HARRIS GETTING SERIOUS At this point in the year, most senior prospects either have committed or at least have trimmed their lists significantly. But that isn't the case for Anthony Harris. Harris, a 6-2, 170-pound WG/PG from Chicago (IL) Whitney Young, is still adding schools to his recruitment. more....
SOPHOMORE SEASON HUGE FOR ALLICK At the junior college level, just as it is in the Division I ranks, high-quality backcourt play is critical to a team's success. Naturally, then, having one of the nation’s best juco guards, 6-3 Donell Allick, on the roster is cause for optimism at Seward County (KS) Community College. Despite his height and reputation as a combo guard, Allick functions best at the wing guard slot. Knocking down three-pointers and taking the ball to the rack, not ball distribution, is Allick’s forte. more....
WALKER STILL LOOKING B.A. Walker had a solid series of performances this past summer, but still is on the hunt for a school this fall. The 6-2, 165-pound combo guard from Nandua (VA) High has a fine shooting touch, long arms and quick hands on defense. If not for a rail-thin build, Walker would surely have more suitors calling than he does currently. more....
"I GUESS YOU COULD SAY GEORGIA TECH LEADS." - Khalif Ford
SERGEANT SWAT MAKES DECISION There are good nicknames and there are bad nicknames, but few kids have ever had a more appropriate moniker than Shawnee Mission (KS) Bishop Miege star Jarrad Henry. A 6-10 BF/C with a penchant for blocking shots in bunches, Henry is better known by many in the Kansas City area as Sergeant Swat, or just plain old Swat. And sure enough, Swat now knows his future college address. more....
ROUNDUP: EVERTSEN PICKS BOSTON COLLEGE Devon Evertsen has given a commitment to Boston College, picking the Eagles over Texas Tech, Iowa State and others. WELLS ON THE MEND After a couple of strong performances at AAU Nationals in July, Isaac Wells was looking forward to touring a few campuses and making his college selection this fall. However, a recent injury has delayed his scheduled. "We had our first game last Saturday and missing that killed me." more....
SUTHERLAND LIKES IVY SCHOOLS Stephen Sutherland has the kind of game that doesn't always get noticed. He's a very smart player who plays with a quiet confidence. And Sutherland, a 6-1, 160-pound guard from Fairmont (WV) High, is happy with his development over the past few months. more....
ANDERSON READY FOR 2004 Cincinnati (OH) Winton Woods swingman C.J. Anderson will do a year of prep school next season and could be a top-100 player in the Class of 2004. The 6-5 Anderson, who averaged 19.3 points, seven rebounds and five assists per game in his junior season, will be the No. 1 option after sharing those duties with now-Miami freshman Robert Hite last season. more....

ROUNDUP: INGRAM PICKS FDU Essentially overlooked by the nation’s high-profile programs, 6-8 BF Jordan Ingram reevaluated his college aspirations and opted to commit to a lesser known school, Fairleigh Dickinson. "I just really liked the school," said Ingram of his decision to play for the Knights. "The visit was really a selling point for me, and the head coach there (Tom Green) played at Syracuse when my uncle was there playing too. That certainly helped." more....
MARSHALL HOPING TO GET BIGGER OFFERS Carl Marshall is just waiting it out and seeing what will happen. "I JUST WANT TO GET STRONGER HERE AND DEVELOP MORE AS A PLAYER." - Donte Minter
DACONES READY TO SHINE As the sole returning player for Oak Hill Academy, Dion Dacones will be leaned on heavily this year. It's unlikely he'll lead the team in scoring, but Dacones, a 6-5, 205-pound WF/BF, should see plenty of minutes for Steve Smith's powerful Warriors. And if that happens, he'll amass a solid collection of scholarship offers from college coaches. more....
YOUTH SET TO EXPLODE FOR DUDLEY Dudley High school will be one of the youngest teams around this year. But they'll also be one of the best. The 3A (second-largest classification) school located in Greensboro, N.C., is missing its main man, Eric Hicks, from last year's team. Hicks may have taken his high-wire act to play for Bob Huggins at Cincinnati, but there's an extremely impressive group of youngsters who are eager to fill the void. more....
CSI STRONG IN THE MIDDLE Southern Idaho finally may be able to get over the hump. The ultra-powerful juco program has seen conference rival Dixie (UT) advance to the junior college national tournament the past two seasons, thanks in large part to Dixie's stud big man, LSU recruit Jamie Lloreda. But now it's Southern Idaho that's loaded in the middle. Guy Beach's club will feature a name very familiar to anyone who followed high school hoops the past couple of seasons, Sani Ibrahim. more....

ROUNDUP: TUCKER PICKS TEXAS P.J. Tucker didn't get the offers he wanted from ACC schools, but the ferocious 6-5, 230-pound BF from Raleigh (NC) Enloe will play in another big-time conference. Tucker committed to the Big 12's emerging Texas program, over interest from West Virginia, Clemson and others. In all likelihood, it won't take long for Tucker to endear himself to intense UT coach Rick Barnes. more....
PREP SCHOOL FOCUS: WINCHENDON Winchendon coach Mike Byrnes has had the luxury for the past two years of having a legitimate big man in the middle. That won’t be the case this season, but the Massachusetts prep school already has five players who have committed to D-1 schools. ``I think we have one of the best backcourts in the conference," said Byrnes, who has coached centers Martin Iti and Sani Ibrahim over the past two seasons. more....

ROUNDUP: ARIZA PICKS BRUINS In a critical recruiting win for UCLA, Steve Lavin and his crew have received a commitment from Trevor Ariza, a 6-7 WF/BF from Los Angeles (CA) Westchester. Ariza is more important for than just his status as a top-30 player. The slender wing's job at UCLA will be to replace would-be star freshman Evan Burns, a McDonald's All-American last year who was surprisingly denied admission to the school at the beginning of the academic year. more....
JUNIOR PREVIEW: MARVIN WILLIAMS Although he hadn't developed a national reputation at the time, last spring there were rumblings from the Northwest that Marvin Williams wasn't an ordinary talent. Rumor had it that Williams, a 6-8 junior WF/BF at Bremerton (WA) High, could run, jump, shoot and handle the ball with the best of them, regardless of class or location. Those rumors proved true over the summer. more....

MOLLOY BOASTS UNDERRATED GUARD One player who could see his stock skyrocket this season is Briarwood (NY) Archbishop Molloy PG Marlon Smith. Though underrated by fans, media and some scouts, he is receiving attention from solid college programs. Reflecting on our notes from the summer, it's easy to see why so many schools want a piece of Smith. more....
JOHNSON EAGER TO RETURN For a high-energy player like Torre Johnson, sitting out the end of summer and fall evaluation period was a killer. It was bad enough that, because of a broken wrist, the 6-6 senior at Milwaukee (WI) Juneau couldn't make his case for a scholarship in front of coaches, but not being able to play any ball with friends was brutal. more....
PILGRIM DOWN TO TWO Mike Pilgrim is done with his visits and he’s almost ready to make his decision. The 6-6 combo forward, a native of Cincinnati who's prepping this year at Wolfeboro (NH) Brewster Academy, will choose between family ties and program prestige in making his college choice. more....
DAHI SLOWED BY VISA PROBLEMS After playing well at the Nike camp this past summer, Arnaud Dahi believed he needed only to sit by the phone to entertain college interest. However, though he did end up waiting around for contact, it wasn't from coaches after all. DIAZ HAS FREAKISH HOPS You won’t find his name among anyone’s list of elite seniors, but according to several Division I coaches, he may be every bit as good as any guard outside of the top 25 and is arguably the most athletic backcourt player in the entire country. Meet Guillermo Diaz, a Puerto Rican native who recently came over to Miami Christian (Fla.). He’s 6-3, 190 pounds and coach Art Alvarez says he has a 50-inch vertical. more....

ROUNDUP: BALKMAN CHOOSES GAMECOCKS After the somewhat unheralded class signed in 2002, South Carolina seemed to be lagging a bit in recruiting compared with some of its SEC peers. But this fall the Gamecocks have changed all that. South Carolina has added to an already-impressive recruiting class by landing a commitment from Renaldo Balkman, a 6-7 WF at Bradenton (FL) IMG who's ranked among the top 75 players in the Class of 2003. more....

KING SEEKS TO QUIET WHISPERS Despite a solid summer, Anthony King has seen his interest from colleges slow down since July. He's also heard rumors that have made him very anxious to begin his season. ROUNDUP: IBEKWE TURNS TERRAPIN The defending national champions closed the book on another year of recruiting Monday, when CA BF/WF Ekene Ibekwe pledged allegiance to Maryland at an afternoon press conference. Ibekwe is exceptionally athletic for a player his size, and has a well-developed post game. To be effective, though, he'll need to focus on that part of his game (he tends to float to the perimeter too often), and add bulk to be able to compete with other ACC big men. more....

PORCH TO WAIT 'TILL SPRING TO SWING Antonio Porch didn't figure to be in this position. The slender 6-6 WF from Denver (CO) East went through the recruiting process over the summer and had his mind pretty much set on Wyoming, and by all indications a scholarship offer was on the way. But as it turned out, Porch doesn't fit into Wyoming's fall plans and he is back out on the open market and eyeing a spring commitment. more....
SHOOTER HOPING TO BECOME TARGET At a time when schools are scouring every inch of the planet for good shooters, the recruitment of Memphis (TN) East WG Marcus Hammond is a bit of a mystery. THOMPSON STILL OPEN Depending on who's talking, Lorenzo Thompson is either a true wing blessed with the strength and body to bang down low, or he is an undersized power type who has the ability to step out on the perimeter. Regardless of which theory one buys into, the 6-7, 230-pound Thompson, a star at Chicago (IL) Crane Tech, is a unique talent who is deserving of some high-major attention. more....

AT THE WEBER: PLAYER EVALUATIONS Perhaps the best thing about the fall Charlie Weber Invitational is the opportunity it provides to see lesser known international players making their debuts in the United States. ANDERSON BACK TO HEALTH, HOPES TO RAISE STOCK Jermaine Anderson has had a turn of bad luck the past few months. "IT'S GOING TO BE LATE, LIKE IN THE SPRING." - Patrick Ewing, Jr.
PREP SCHOOL FOCUS: BLAIR ACADEMY Joe Mantegna's club was on the wrong end of a handful of close games last season. Don't expect that to happen again. Not with the influx of perimeter shooters around to keep opponents honest. Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva are arguably the top two players in the country not named "LeBron" and believe it or not, they're on the same team at Blairstown (NJ) Blair Academy. more....
ROBERTS STILL LIKES ORANGE, TERPS ON TAP Terrence Roberts found himself without some of his sidekicks this past weekend at the Charlie Weber Invitational, held every fall on the campus of Maryland. "MY NEXT OFFICIAL VISIT WILL BE TO FRESNO STATE." - Vincent Camper
PREP SCHOOL FOCUS: HARGRAVE There is no James White on this Hargrave team, but Mike Preston's squad is hardly lacking for athleticism or shooters. ``We probably have nine or 10 Division I players," said Preston, who took over the team from Kevin Keatts (now an assistant at Marshall) two years ago. "That might be our strength. We can pretty much go all the way down the roster and get contributions from everyone." more....

"WHETHER IT'S NAIA OR HIGH-MAJOR DIVISION I, ALL OF THESE COACHES SPEAK
THE SAME LANGUAGE." - Darius Washington, Sr.
JONUS HAS A FAVORITE If he'd been quicker on the trigger, Justin Jonus would be committed right now. But the 6-7, 205-pound WF/WG from Douglas (AL) High wasn't quite ready to decide, and as a result he's still open. However, one school presides atop the others on his college list. more....
MCANDREW WANTS HOOPS, ACADEMICS Mark McAndrew is one of those guys who's going to play Division I basketball because he can shoot. The 6-2,170-pound WG from Barrington (RI) High has created some buzz with his ability to shoot the ball from downtown, and schools are starting to take notice. McAndrew recently was named MVP at the New England Top 100 Camp, where he shot close to 75 percent from behind the arc. This came on the heels of a strong performance at the Charlie Weber Invitational this past July, where McAndrew hit nine threes in one game. more....
PREP SCHOOL FOCUS: WEST NOTTINGHAM Colora (MD) West Nottingham Academy isn't your typical prep school. Not only are its academic standards near the top, but it's also the oldest boarding school in the entire country. It's no secret that Chillous' team will be able to get up and down the floor. Former South Carroll (Md.) big man Josh Boone, who is looking at Kansas, UConn, Virginia, Stanford, Rutgers and St. Joseph's, runs the floor extremely well for a frontcourt player. more....

PREP SCHOOL FOCUS: NEW HAMPTON Everyone, including coach Jamie Arsenault, figured that the top big man at New Hampton (NH) Prep this season would be Julius Lamptey. That doesn't look like it'll be the case. While Lamptey still is a high-major college prospect and may even test the NBA waters, it's Oluwafemi "Femi" Ibikunle who is drawing most of the praise from college coaches and other observers. more.... |
