TOP 20 PREP SCHOOL POLL

After watching the majority of the top teams at the recent War on the Shore Prep Invitational, it looks like a few teams have separated themselves in the Top 20 National Prep Poll. Take a look at all the movement in this week’s poll. If you have any suggestions of new teams, please e-mail Jeff Goodman at JGood67213@aol.com.

1. Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) (2-0) *1 (last poll)

Results: Beat Our Savior (N.Y.), 73-49; Defeated Notre Dame Academy (Va.), 72-54.
Next: Saturday vs. Trinity Pawling (N.Y.)

Notes: Senior Loul Deng (Duke) scored 25 points and grabbed 13 boards in the win against Our Savior and had 16 points and five rebounds against Notre Dame Academy. Senior Charlie Villanueva averaged 17 points and 8.5 boards in the two wins and had nine blocks against ND Academy. Guard Patrick Davidson had 16 points against Our Savior while Roberto Felipe chipped in 19 against Notre Dame and was the team’s top defender at the War.

2. Worcester Academy (Worcester, Mass.) (2-0) *3

Results: Pounded West Nottingham (Md.), 83-48; Beat Bridgton (Maine), 81-66.
Next: Saturday-Sunday in the Blackburn Tourney (Worcester, Mass.)

Notes: Providence-bound senior combo guard Dwight Brewington led the Hilltoppers with 15 against West Nottingham and added 23 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists against Bridgton. Backcourt mate Stevie Hailey (Boston College) finished with 10 points and 7 assists against West Nottingham and 25 points, including hitting four of five trifectas, in the win over Bridgton. Sam Kaplan (Yale) averaged 15 points in the two wins.

3. Laurinburg Prep (Laurinburg, N.C.) (9-0) *8

Results: Beat National Christian (Md.), 79-54; Edged Winchendon (Mass.), 76-68, in overtime; Beat Cape Fear CC; Defeated Laurinburg Charter; Beat Laurinburg Institute; Defeated Bonner Academy; Beat Love Christian; Defeated Gastonia All-Stars; Beat Mayland CC.
Next: Friday-Sunday at the Prep Stars International (Ontario)

Notes: The high-flying combo of Regis Koundjia (LSU) and LaKeith Blanks (Texas A&M) has proven tough to contain so far. Koundjia had 16 against National Christian and 18 vs. Winchendon while Blanks had 12 in the win over National Christian and 22 against Winchendon. Boubacar Coly (Xavier) leads the team with 11 rebounds per game.

4. St. Thomas More (Oakdale, Conn.) (3-0) *13

Results: Beat Hargrave (Va.), 69-43; Defeated Milford (Conn.), 83-54; Beat Harvard JV, 72-67.
Next: Friday vs. West Point Prep; Sunday at Holy Cross JV

Notes: Quincy Douby proved, once again, he’s one of the top shooters in the country. The 6-3 senior scored 19 against Hargrave and lit up Milford for 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Point guard Loren Stokes (Hofstra) had 8 points and 5 rebounds against Hargrave. Douby scored 25 and Stokes added 20 against the Harvard JV team.

5. Winchendon School (Winchendon, Mass.) (3-1) *4

Results: Beat Our Savior (N.Y.), 61-47; Lost to Laurinburg (N.C.), 76-68, in overtime; Pounded Storm King (N.Y.), 117-71; Defeated Notre Dame Prep (Mass.), 107-81.
Next: Saturday-Sunday at the MCI Tourney; Dec. 10 vs. Redemption Christian

Brown led the team with 29 points while Maryland-bound big man Hassan Fofana, who has struggled offensively so far, had 7 points and 6 rebounds.

7. Bridgton Academy (North Bridgton, Maine) (5-1) *2

Results: Edged Life Center (N.J.), 53-51; Lost to Worcester Academy (Mass.), 81-66; Beat Cornell JV, 91-67 and 108-63; Defeated Redemption Christian (N.Y.), 86-68; Beat Maine All-Stars.
Next: Friday-Saturday at the Fork Union Tournament (Va.)

Notes: Senior big man Alexander Johnson, who has de-committed from Georgia, had 20 points and 10 boards in the win over Life Center. Carlos Rivera led the team with 17 points against Redemption while Johnson grabbed 14 boards. Coach Whit Lesure has lost his starting backcourt, Bruce Price and Rashard Turner, and power forward Ousmane Konate (Missouri), who has also left school and won’t return. Bridgton did get one addition Detroit native Courtney Williams left Milford Academy (Conn.) and landed in Maine.

8. Notre Dame Prep (Fitchburg, Mass.) (7-1) *6

Results: Crushed National Christian (Md.), 94-53; Edged Lutheran Christian Academy (Pa.), 58-53; Defeated New Hampton (N.H.), 72-56; Beat Army Prep, 100-72 and 98-57; Defeated Hesser Junior College, 115-70; Beat Harvard, 91-79; Lost to New Hampton (N.H.), 95-89.
Next: Saturday-Sunday at the MCI Classic (Maine)

Notes: It’s not an easy task to contain the super-quick backcourt of Gary Ervin (Miss St.) and Will Blaylock (Iowa State) as Lutheran found out in Delaware. Ervin finished with 20 and Blaylock added 18. Shooting guard Josh Bell has been the early surprise, scoring 13 against National Christian, grabbing 11 boards in the win over Lutheran and finishing with 18 against Army Prep and 19 in the victory over Hesser. He also held New Hampton’s Mike Cook to 18 points, well below his average this season.

9. New Hampton Prep (New Hampton, N.H.) (3-2) *7

Results: Beat Coastal Christian (Va.), 62-51; Lost to Notre Dame Prep (Mass.), 72-56; Beat Notre Dame Prep (Mass.), 95-89. Lost to Harvard JV, 69-57; Beat Redemption Christian, 90-75.
Next: Friday-Saturday at the Fork Union Invitational (Va.)

Notes: Unsigned senior Michael Cook continued his torrid scoring with 30 points and 14 boards in the win over Coastal while senior power forward Femi Ibikunle was held to 2 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks. Coach Jamie Arsenault’s team played without starting center Julius Lamptey (broken finger) for both games in Delaware. Cook finished with 18 points in the setback to Notre Dame Prep.

10. Fork Union Military Academy (Fork Union, Va.) (6-0) *NR

Results: Beat Virginia JV twice; Defeated Bridgewater College; Beat Cornell JV twice; Defeated Roanoke College JV.

Next: Saturday-Sunday at the MCI Invitational; Dec. 11 at Bridgton; Dec. 12 at Southern Maine Technical College

Notes: Senior small forward Marquise Kately leads the team averaging 23 points per game thus far while guard Frank Robinson is at 17 ppg. Forward Mike Tuck leads the club with seven boards per contest.

12. Milford Academy (Milford, Conn.) (9-3) *9

Results: Beat Brewster Academy (N.H.), 91-83; Lost to St. Thomas More (N.H.), 83-54; Beat Capital Community College, 73-61; Lost to Redemption Christian (N.Y.), 78-70.
Next: Friday vs. Springfield Tech

Notes: Bob Riggio’s squad looked unbeatable in the win against Brewster as Jamual Warren used his speed to push the ball up the court and create easy baskets for his teammates. Warren finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists while Roosevelt Lee had 27 points and 6 boards in the win and Jonathan Lyles added 17. Now Riggio is trying to raise enough money to keep the team going for the rest of the season now that the players don’t have a dorm. Everything is up in the air and the team cancelled its trip to Canada for the Prep Stars Invitational in Ontario, Canada.

13. Northfield Mount Hermon (Northfield, Mass.) (0-0) *17

Last Year: 13-12
Coach: Bill Batty (15th season)
Top Player: PF Sam Manhanga (6-6, 225, Post-Grad)
Starters: SF Cori Boston (6-5, 205, Post-Grad); C Ryan Brimley (6-10, 255, Post-Grad); PG Fred Jones (5-11, 155, SR); PG Kashif Payne (5-9, 155, JR)
Others: G-F Robert Taylor (6-5, 200, Post-Grad); PF Mischa Tripoli (6-4, Post-Grad): PF Eli Manna (6-7, 230, Post-Grad); G-F Charmel Maynard (6-4, SR); PF Sokal Zejan (6-7, SR); SG Christian Corey (6-1, 180, SR); SG Alex Thayer (6-3, 180, JR)

Notes: Jones and Payne will give the team one of the quickest backcourts in the country. Jones is from Greenfield (Mass.) and has improved his outside shot while Payne comes from Archbishop Carroll (Pa.), where he averaged 18 points and 8 assists per game last season. Boston, who is leaning towards UNH, won a trio of state titles at Charlestown and will make the switch from the inside to the wing. Manhanga (Brown) is somewhat raw, but he’s extremely athletic and comes from Greenwich High (Conn.). Brimley (James Madison) gives the team an inside presence and can knock down the mid-range jumper. He averaged 16 points and 10 boards for Auburn High (N.Y.) a year ago.

Strength: Point guard play
Weakness: Wing Players making transition from inside
Tournaments: NYC Boys Club

Next Game: Saturday vs. Exeter

14. Lutheran Christian Academy (Philadelphia, Pa.) (4-3) *18

Results: Beat Penn JV, 94-85; Lost to Notre Dame Prep (Mass.), 68-63; Beat Coastal Christian (Va.), 90-83; Lost to Oak Hill (Va.), 80-71; Beat Coastal Christian, 87-71; Defeated St. Joseph’s JV.
Next: Friday-Sunday at the Prep Stars International (Ontario)

Notes: Unsigned senior big man Charles Bronson had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Notre Dame Prep and 17 points and 13 boards against the Penn JV squad while Dalik Powell led the team with 22 points and also grabbed 7 boards in the win over Penn JV. Unsigned senior shooting guard Maurice Maxwell added 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in the victory against Penn JV. Coach Darryl Schofield will get a boost this week when Southern (Md.) High forward Renardo Dickerson transfers in to school.

15. Redemption Christian (Troy, N.Y.) (2-3) *20

Results: Beat Milford (Conn.), 78-70; Lost to Bridgton (Maine), 86-68; Lost to New Hampton (N.H.), 90-75; Lost to Maine Central Institute (Maine), 97-85.
Next: Dec. 10 vs. Winchendon (Mass.)

Notes: Shooting guard Chris LaBoard sank five trifectas and finished with 20 points against Milford while junior power forward Jermaine Johnson led the team with 21.

16. Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) (0-2) *12

Results: Lost to Milford (Conn.), 91-83; Lost to Hargrave (Va.), 90-85.
Next: Friday vs. Thayer Academy (Mass.); Saturday-Sunday at the MCI Tournament (Maine).

Notes: Junior forward Norman Plummer led the team in both games with 20 points and 11 boards against Milford and 32 in the setback to Hargrave. Fellow junior Joel Smith had 16 points and 8 boards against Milford while unsigned senior Blake Schilb averaged 10.5 points and 12 rebounds in the two losses. Senior Mike Pilgrim (Cincinnati) was unimpressive with 11 points in each of the two setbacks.

17. Trinity Pawling (Pawling, N.Y.) (0-0) *19

Last Year: 20-3 (NEPSAC Class B quarterfinals)
Coach: Bill Casson (2nd season)
Top Player: F Dante Milligan (6-8, 200, SR)
Starters: PG Dontae Draper (5-10, 180, SR); SG Larry Kelly (6-1, Post-Grad); G Michael Lopez (6-1, Post-Grad); PF Chris Turner (6-5, Post-Grad)
Others: F Dominic White (6-5, JR); F Reid Whittman (6-8, SOPH); F Jamal Benjamin (6-7, SOPH)

Notes: Milligan (Pittsburgh) is a slasher who can also step outside and knock down the 3-pointer as he showed a year ago when he hit 41 percent of his trifectas. Draper (College of Charleston) is a Baltimore native who averaged 17 points, 6 boards and 5 assists last season at Walbrook High. Kelly, a New Haven (Conn.) native, will likely start at the off-guard spot. He’s a streaky shooter who will either go low D-1 or D-2. Lopez is a combo guard from Florida while Turner is a two-sport star from Henninger High (N.Y.) who will give Casson toughness inside.

Strength: Quickness; Shooting
Weakness: Lack of physical play
Tournaments: NYC Boys Club Holiday Classic

Next Game: Saturday vs. Blair Academy (N.J.); Dec. 9 vs. Gunnery

18. West Nottingham Academy (Colora, Md.) (1-2) *14

Results: Beat Life Center (N.J.), 40-38; Lost to Worcester Academy (Mass.), 83-48; Lost to Life Center, 67-50.
Next: Friday at the Prep Stars of North America Tournament

Notes: Coach Ralph Chillious has two great players in senior big man Josh Boone (UConn) and junior guard Cheyenne Moore, but there’s just not enough depth. Boone averaged 14.7 points and 13.3 rebounds per game while Moore had 12 points and 9 rebounds in the loss to Worcester and 10 points, 5 boards and 4 assists in the win over Life Center. Forward Keri Gonsalves scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the loss to Life Center.

19. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) (3-5) *16

Results: N/A
Next: Dec. 12-14 at the Mercersburg Tournament (Pa.)

Notes: Renaldo Balkman, Danny Morrissey, Rashad Bilal and Jermaine Bell have been the main contributors as IMG has played a junior college-laden schedule so far this season.

20. Coastal Christian (Virginia Beach, Va.) (2-5) *15

Results: Lost to New Hampton (N.H.), 62-51; Lost to Lutheran Christian (Pa.), 90-83; Beat Laurinburg Institute (N.C.), 61-55; Lost to Ryan Academy (Va.), 72-56; Lost to Oak Hill (Va.), 110-87; Lost to Lutheran Christian (Pa.). 87-71; Beat Woodrow Wilson, 88-37.
Next: Friday-Sunday at the Prep Stars International (Ontario); Dec. 12-14 at the Slam City Classic (Virginia Beach, Va.)

Notes: Ray George (Georgia State) scored 20 points and had 5 rebounds while backcourt mate J.R. Pinnock added 12 points and grabbed 10 boards in the loss to New Hampton. Coach Walter Webb was without George in the Bull City Classic, where the team split two games, because he was home for the holiday break.

Others to Watch:

Love Christian (Raleigh, N.C.) (3-2) *NR

Results: Lost to Ocala Shores (Fla.), 66-56; Beat Abundant Life, 86-53; Beat Pleasant Union, 80-74; Lost to Ryan Academy; Defeated Bonner Academy.

Notes: Canadian power forward Sam Ashalou scored 31 in the loss to Ocala Shores, had 24 against Ryan and finished with 18 in the win over Pleasant Union. Tristan Martin led the club with 19 against Bonner and D.J. Gibson had 14 in the win over Abundant Life.

Storm King (Cornwall, N.Y.) (1-1)

Results: Lost to Winchendon (Mass.), 117-71; Beat Canterbury, 87-56.
Next: Friday vs. Wooster (Conn.)

Notes: DePaul-bound senior forward Sammy Mejia scored 43 of the team’s 71 points in the loss to Winchendon and added 37 against Canterbury.

Salisbury School (Salisbury, Conn.) (0-0)

Last Year: 15-9 (NEPSAC Class B quarterfinals)
Coach: Chris Hinchey (9th season)
Top Player: PF Lawrence Carrier (6-8, 230, SR)
Starters: PG Sean Neal (6-1, SR); SG Kenny Jones (6-2, Post-Grad); F
Trevor Williams (6-5, Post-Grad); F Sayre Brennan (6-5, SR); G Jay Wosencroft (6-0, SOPH)
Others: F Lonnie McMillan (6-4, JR); G Jay Wosencroft (6-, SOPH); G Nick Cantone (5-11, SOPH)

Notes: Carrier was once considered a Top 25 player in his class, but the California native has suffered numerous injuries over the past couple of years and will need to re-establish himself early this season to get the attention of major colleges. Neal, a point guard from Springfield, Mass., has committed to LaSalle and gives the team toughness and a penetrator who can push the ball. The team doesn’t have a ton of size other than Carrier, but look for Williams and Brennan to provide some help in the paint. Jones is a quality shooter from Norwich, Conn., and newcomers McMillan, Wosencroft and Cantone will be counted upon to help off the bench.

Strength: Quickness
Weakness: Size
Tournaments: Thomas Blackburn Holiday Invitational (Mass.)

Next Game: Saturday-Sunday at the Blackburn Tournament (Worcester, Mass.); Dec. 11 at Berkshire School
