KAUN TO RULE IN LAWRENCE

By Rob Harrington

Bill Self continues to prove that he's one of the nation's best recruiters. As expected, the first-year Kansas coach has added his best recruit yet since taking the reigns in Lawrence, 6-11 C Alexander Kaun.

Kaun, a native of Siberia who's prepping at Melbourne (FL) Florida Air, is one of the most physical and relentless big men in the nation. He battles hard for post position on every play -- and typically more than once during each possession -- and when he gets the ball he immediately makes a strong move for the basket.

Kaun's arsenal of power moves includes a nice drop step, jump hook and variety of vicious jams inside. He does have stretches when he struggles to convert from close-range, and he had some downright awful games during the spring, but his overall physical gifts and inspired play against bigger names (at the time) justify his place among the national elite.

Kansas now has commitments from Kaun, NY WG/PG Russell Robinson and OK C/BF Darnell Jackson.
