MORROW PICKS YELLOW JACKETS

By Rob Harrington

October 2, 2003

Georgia Tech needed shooters, and the Yellow Jackets have landed two this week. First came the expected pledge from SC WG Zam Frederick, and now Tech has a commitment from Anthony Morrow.

Morrow, a sweet-shooting 6-6 WF/WG at Charlotte (NC) Latin, chose Georgia Tech over N.C. State, Charlotte and Tennessee.

Morrow is solid athletically and handling the ball on the perimeter, but clearly his role for Tech will be to fire in long-range jumpers. While his release is low and could be bothered by top-notch athletes, he has a quick shot release and is capable of carrying his team offensively for long stretches.

MONK MAKES IT OFFICIAL

Marcus Monk's commitment to Arkansas was simply a matter of timing, and now the 6-6 WF/BF from Lepanto (AR) East Poinsett has made it happen -- although he'll sign a football grant in February.

Monk, who also stars on the gridiron, won't be able to join the hoops team until after football season each year, but he also won't count against the basketball Razorbacks' scholarship limit, essentially giving Arkansas coach Stan Heath free, top-125 help. That's not a bad deal.

Before focusing exclusively on Arkansas, Monk also had received interest from Mississippi, Penn State, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech and others.

STANFORD GETS FINGER

Taj Finger has committed to Stanford, picking Mike Montgomery's Cardinal over co-finalist Richmond.

Finger, a mobile 6-8 BF from Bedford (NY) Fox Lane, presently does not have the strength to compete in the Pac-10, but with added muscle he should fit well into Stanford's system.

Not only does Finger run well, he also has developed some perimeter skills and has good coordination around the basket. A top student, he also had attracted attention from Northwestern and Villanova.
