WALKER EXPLODES AT CLASSIC LIBERTY, Mo. Over the past 24 years, the Bank Midwest Classic has established itself as a Kansas City Holiday tradition. Played on the campus of William Jewell College, the unique tournament format has served as a proving ground for emerging stars. The 2003 version of the event kept that tradition alive, as several young players announced their presence on the local scene. But it was Kansas City (MO) O'Hara scoring machine Marcus Walker who turned in the finest single-game performance in tournament history. more....
OAK HILL SURVIVES TEST FROM MOELLER RALEIGH, N.C. Oak Hill captured the championship of the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational, but it wasn't easy. The Warriors, led by MVP Josh Smith, were tested throughout the game by a hungry and fiesty bunch from Cincinnati Moeller. Smith scored 20 points for the winners on 8-15 shooting, displaying the majestic athleticism that has made him a hit coast to coast and with the hordes of NBA scouts who have made trips to watch him this season. more....
He really has harnessed
his ability
Lon Morris assistant coach Rick Dotson, on Allen Guyton
RESERVE FORCES WAY INTO FINAL It was a most unlikely hero for Reserve (LA) Christian in their 79-76 upset victory over Los Angeles (CA) Westchester. 6-6 SR PF George Brozos, who doubles as a tight end on the gridiron, came up big down the stretch. Brozos helped giant-killer Reserve battle back from a huge first half deficit and pull off their second consecutive upset, securing a place in tomorrow night's final against Atlanta (GA) Southwest Christian and Dwight Howard. more....
RONDO DELIGHTS AT GLAXO RALEIGH, N.C. Of the six games played at the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational on Monday, the highlight was the evening battle between Georgetown Prep and Oak Hill Academy with the emphasis on highlight. The Warriors were, as usual, led by mega-athlete Josh Smith, who led all scorers with 17 points. But it was senior guard Rajon Rondo who really stole the show. more....
White, Caracter Duel At The Beach LEWES, Del. There were two guests of honor invited to the party. D.J. White and Derrick Caracter were the players everyone wanted to see and they didn't disappoint, but it was an imposter who crashed the party, Lance Thomas, who played the biggest role in the Scotch Plains (NJ) Fanwood victory over Tuscaloosa (AL) Hillcrest by a score of 65-51. The White-Caracter show was all that it was hailed to be, as both players showed what all the fuss was about concerning each of their games. more....
CLARK CHANGES INTO SUPERMAN MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. In a battle of Northeastern powers, the advantage shifted slightly to the west, as Philadelphia's Cardinal Dougherty outlasted St. Raymond's from The Bronx. Villanova-bound junior Shane Clark was the star of the game, which was especially important because teammate Kyle Lowry had a relatively subpar outing. more....
MCCLURE SHINES AT GLAXO RALEIGH, N.C. The opening day of the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Holiday Invitational at N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh featured outstanding performances by a pair of big-time signees. First was 6-6 Duke WF/BF signee David McClure of Stamford (CT) Trinity Catholic in his team's 70-33 trouncing of abysmal Durham (NC) Riverside, and No. 2 was 6-8 Indiana WF/BF recruit Josh Smith in powerful Mouth of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill Academy's 76-50 whipping of game but overmatched Sanford (NC) Lee County. more....
CARTER LEADS ROMP AT SLAM LEWES, Del. The final score of 78-61 was closer than the game actually was as LaPlace (LA) Reserve Christian Academy dominated the second half in a thorough defeat of Seattle (WA) Rainier Beach at the Slam Dunk to the Beach. Reserve only led by six points at halftime but used a 26-8 third quarter to assume dominance, and it was behind the brilliance and direction of 5-10 SO PG Demond Carter. The guy they call "Tweety" flawlessly orchestrated the Reserve offense and is clearly the lead dog in the pack, although there are several other good young players on his team. more....
JOHNSON PACES EDGEWATER INTO SEMIS MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Saturday's marquee match-up at the Beach Ball Classic pitted a pair of senior All-Americans against each other, Archbishop Spalding's Rudy Gay and Edgewater's Darius Washington. But it was another Edgewater guard who spurred his team to a 66-54 triumph. Brandon Johnson was the catalyst, scoring 22 points on 9-14 shooting and adding six rebounds and four assists. His scoring in the first half, when Edgewater built the lead it would nurse the entire game, was crucial. more....
PALACIOS LEADS OUR SAVIOR LEWES, Del. After struggling mightily at the War on the Shore in November, Juan Palacios had a much better return to Delaware on the first day of Slam Dunk to the Beach. Palacios scored 23 points and added 13 rebounds to spearhead Centereach (NY) Our Savior's surprising 74-52 rout over Philadelphia (PA) Penn Charter. Conversely, Sean Singletary suffered through one of those games he would rather forget. He shot 0-8 from the floor in the first half, including 0-5 from behind the arc. more....
GAY STEPS UP ON OPENING NIGHT MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. While several major tournaments won't begin play until Saturday, the venerable Beach Ball Classic welcomed fans a day after Christmas, and those in attendance were treated to some big-time performances. One of the day's best was authored by UConn signee Rudy Gay. The Archbishop Spalding star had a very good game and was just a few rim-outs from have a great one. more....
He is irreplaceable to our team because of his
leadership
Coach Rick Dotson, on Esteban Bonzano
Kitchen Cooking Up Some Defense Derwin Kitchen has used the national stage at the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, FL to showcase a versatile package of skills that is enticing more than a few schools to take a closer look. The 6-3, 180-pound junior G from Jacksonville (FL) Raines is fast with the ball and the clear leader on the court for his team. more....
Coleman Leads St. Petersburg Head coach Earnest Crumbley knows that the depth and talent of his squad has helped his team jump out to an early 11-2 record, but he also indicates that his point guard is a major reason for the early success. 6-2, 175-pound SO Demetrius Coleman has averaged 10.8 points and 9.5 assists through the first 13 games, and Crumbley makes it clear that Coleman is the team leader. more....
WESTCHESTER NIPS LEXINGTON FORT MYERS, Fla. Billed by many as the match-up between the two best teams at the City of Palms Classic, Los Angeles Westchester made a fourth-quarter charge and held on late to defeat Lexington Catholic 58-54. In the other semifinal, LSU Lab blew out Toledo St. John's in a game that wasn't even as close as the 71-54 score. That means Westchester and LSU Lab will meet in the final. more....
Montverde Takes Championship Earlier this fall we mentioned the arrival of former Forestville (MD) Bishop McNamara coach Kevin Sutton in Florida to take over the helm of Montverde (FL) Academy. We had the opportunity to watch Montverde take home the Mt. Dora Bible Tournament championship this weekend with a 53-47 victory over the host school, coming from behind in the fourth quarter after trailing by 7 points at halftime. more....
RAYMOND POWERS ST. JOHN'S FORT MYERS, Fla. The best of the City of Palms' quarterfinal games featured Miami Senior High against Toledo St. John's, and youth was the key word. Miami boasts a very impressive array of sophomores and freshmen, but it was St. John's junior B.J. Raymond who stole the show. Raymond, a 6-6, 200-pound WF/BF, scored 28 points and did so in surprising fashion. more....
SOUTH GWINNETT HANGS ON FORT MYERS, Fla. He scored 28 points in a hard-fought win over Raines, but in truth Louis Williams really struggled Friday night at the City of Palms Classic. The 6-2 (or is it now 6-3?) WG for South Gwinnett hit just 9-25 from the field and only 2-10 on threes against Jacksonville (FL) Raines. As has been his bugaboo in the past, poor shot selection played a big hand in his problems. On the plus side, however, Williams displayed his superb athleticism and never checked out of the game mentally. Everyone in attendance is eager to see if he can get back on track to keep South Gwinnett in the hunt for the championship. more....
BIG BABY SPANKS FORT MYERS FORT MYERS, Fla. They call him Big Baby, but it was the locals who were sent home crying Thursday night after the first round of the City of Palms Classic. Glen Davis, the LSU-bound center, didn't have his best game but still managed 26 points (11-23 FG) and 11 rebounds. He failed to hit his turnaround jumpers, but few players his size heck, not many players are his size can finish baseline drives with reverse layups as easily as Davis. more....
DEFENSE BLOOMING NICELY Glendale CC sophomore Eric Bloom acknowledges his physical limitations. Bloom, in fact, would probably be the first to admit that he isnt a fleet of foot thoroughbred or an explosive leaper. So how did the 64 shooting guard manage to ascend to junior college All-American status? By playing fundamental, blue collar basketball and devoting hours to pre-game preparation. "Eric is very diligent in terms of scouting, and he is a very good fundamental player," said Glendale head coach Howard Brown. more....
NELSON SEEKS RIGHT SITUATION Low and mid major schools tend to enjoy a greater degree of continuity than their high profile brethren largely because their kids typically spend three or four years developing together. Recruiters at this level, therefore, arent required to replenish the roster as often, but they must recruit with the concept of team chemistry foremost in their minds. This "team=family" recruiting mindset helps explain the appeal of Glendale CC sophomore point guard Ryan Nelson more....
Culver Uses Experience If you are looking in the Junior college ranks for interior help, a careful look down south might prove beneficial, as Patrick Culver is starting to see his offensive game start to catch up with his defensive prowess. Culver, a 6-9, 225-pound sophomore at Shelton State (AL) JC, is averaging 12 points and 11 rebounds this year, after putting up 9 and 9 last year. His offensive improvement is notable, according to Shelton State head coach Barry Mohun. more....
Steady Smith Gaining Admirers With a blue collar game that doesn't include a lot of frills, but rather consistent production, Kenny Smith is getting it done on the court this year at Seminole (OK) JC, and his coach there is leading the group of admirers of his game. "Kenny knows how to win, that's all he has ever done in basketball is win," head coach Tom Mills told PrepStars.com. "Wherever he has played, starting back in high school, Kenny has won." more....
I didn't sign in the fall because I wasn't 100 percent sure that I liked one school
better than another Ralph Jennings
Mikalauskas Adding Bulk Laurynas Mikalauskas is now in his third year of playing ball in the United States at St George (VA) Blue Ridge, having arrived from Lithuania. His adjustment to stateside basketball has been deep and thorough. more....
HIGH-MAJORS RUN TO WALKER During the summer of 2002, Marcus Walker earned recognition as a rising sophomore at the Nike All-America Camp. But after missing this past summer's camp, it seems he's become somewhat forgotten on the national scene. College coaches, however, haven't forgotten about the 6-0 PG from Kansas City (MO) O'Hara, and he's acutely aware of schools showing interest in him. more....
Alabama, UNC and Tennessee have impressed me. Richard Hendrix
JOHNSON WORKS TO IMPROVE SHOOTING Brandon Johnson is one of the better unsigned senior point guards, but his recruitment is sort of drifting along this winter. He thinks he knows why. "I think (the lack of interest) was probably because of my jump shot this summer, I really do," Johnson said. "I think the coaches saw me in a slump with my shooting." more....
JUNIOR GUARD SLY LIKE A WOODFOX As a sophomore at Lewisville (TX) High, Booker Woodfox averaged 26 points per game; keeping that pace this season, the junior guard is getting 25 points, four rebounds and three assists through his first 11 games. The 6-1, 170-pound junior WG/PG hasn't seen his numbers change significantly from last year, but he has upgraded his overall game. more.... "I don't have a leader, but Florida could have a
slight edge. ..." Keith Brumbaugh
POWELL, MULLIS COMMIT EARLY Quickly emerging as a surprising recruiting force under Oliver Purnell, Clemson landed its second major commitment from the Class of 2005 over the weekend, getting the nod from 6-8 BF Julius Powell from Newton (NC) Newton-Conover. Elsewhere, Charlotte picked up an early verbal from Mitch Mullis, a hard-working big forward who is mobile and active on the glass. more....
MARSHALL'S PLAN TO WAIT After not signing in the fall, Christian Marshall knows scholarship offers will come if he continues putting up numbers this year, especially given the fact that he plays a position schools crave most. Marshall, a 6-10, 215-pound senior BF/C from Jackson (MS) Wingfield, first must get his academics in order and then make a decision later. more....
GRAHAM BODIES UP TO GET DOWN A force in the paint, Jimmy Graham is a player who knows his role and his game is starting to flourish this year. "I pretty much think that I will be a power forward in college and I want to play some at power forward, because I'm quicker than most people," Graham said. "I would love, though, to be a center in college because I love the post." more....
KMOX SHOOTOUT 2003 When it comes to the KMOX Shootout, the numbers don't lie. Throughout KMOX's illustrious 23 year history 73 McDonald's All-Americans, 67 NBA Draft picks and at least 15 prep players of the year have taken the court to do battle in what is arguably the single best one day event in all of high school basketball. more....
Mesa Has Frontcourt Firepower Former NBA player Alton Lister should know a little about post play and frontcourt players, so when he talks about those subjects, one is wise to pay close attention. Fred Marshall and Ryan Rourke have been on his mind recently. more....
Guse Gains Confidence Head coach Tim Parmeter of Eastern Arizona JC states that sophomore F Steve Guse's game has been elevated this year due to his increased confidence level. "The biggest thing for Steve this year has been probably that he is more confident, and that allows him to go out and do a lot of things on the floor," Parmeter told PrepStars.com. "He has been held back with a foot injury some, but he can shoot outside, score inside and just really do a lot of things." more....
Anderson Having Strong Season On a team that includes Oklahoma-signee Longar Longar, Cincinnati-bound G Vincent Banks and Memphis-bound inside stud Richard Dorsey, Lauringburg (N.C.) Prep head coach Chris Chaney has an abundance of talent. None is off to a better start than uncommitted senior G/F C.J. Anderson. "I think that C.J. is a top 50 (in the country) player and he has been our best player before the break," Chaney told PrepStars.com. more....
MITCHELL TAKING HIS TIME Rather than attach a long list of conditions for college recruiters like some players do, Class of 2005 star Tasmin Mitchell believes in keeping the process simple. The elite 6-7 WF/BF from Denham Springs (LA) High wants to find a situation that's mutually beneficial. "Basically, I'm interested in what myself and a college can do for each other," Mitchell said. "I want to know about how we both can improve and how we can help each other. more.... "Everyone
thinks that I'm still going to East Carolina, I guess." Cedric Jackson
DOLLARD CHANGES HANDS While acknowledging that his recent move to Pickens (SC) Prince Avenue Prep from Hemingway (SC) High was based on academics, Josh Dollard quickly made his presence felt on the court at his new digs. "I just got here (last) Wednesday and played two games on Friday and Saturday," Dollard said. "I wanted to work on my grades and get better looks from colleges, so hopefully I will sign in the spring." more....
NEW SCHOOL PURSUES FLETCHER The fall signing period came and went and Dupree Fletcher was nowhere to be found among the list of signees. The diminutive guard is now banking on a big senior season to draw good scholarship offers for the spring. While he admittedly had a disappointing summer, Fletcher's stock is very likely to rise this season, when high-major programs in search of guards have relatively few viable options. One Pac-10 program recently jumped into the free. more....
CIECKA RAISING PROFILE A point guard's primary function is to distribute the ball, but he also must protect it and deliver it at the right time and place to a teammate. Vinny Ciecka, an underrated junior from New Jersey, understands those concepts. Standing in at just under six feet, Ciecka is patient enough to allow plays to develop in front of him. Then, the Haddonfield, New Jersey native carefully picks the best scoring option. more.... "Basically,
I want to stay close to home. ..." Paris Carter
EBERT GETS THUMBS UP Like most successful coaches, Kirkwood (IA) CC head man Dave Wagemester demands that his players share the basketball. His goal is for every member of the starting lineup to score in double figures. Wagemester also understands, however, that all players are not created equal and that some, like 6-2 wing guard James Ebert, should be a little more selfish from time to time. more.... "He's
very bouncy, and he isn't afraid to get his nose dirty." Coach Dave Wagemester, on James Hickey
PORTER REOPENS RECRUITMENT Rell Porter committed to Stephen F. Austin this fall, but he decided not to sign last month and has reopened his recruitment. "Basically, I didn't feel that it was the decision I wanted to make and I feel I made it too early," Porter said. "Sometimes schools put pressure on you to sign early and I felt pressure, but I wasn't ready (to sign). I still like them, but they said they won't recruit me anymore." more....
MAYBEN JOINS HOLLOWAY AS COMMIT Syracuse locked up its successor to Gerry McNamara, getting a key early commitment from junior Tiki Mayben, a long-time target from Troy (NY) High who had favored the Orange for many months. Mayben is a 6-2 PG who is a very capable, even flashy, ball-handler and passer who had a solid summer in 2003. Elsewhere, Louisville picked up an early pledge from IL C Clarence Holloway. more.... "I
really like Kansas, but Duke is my dream school." Lamar Falley
HUNTING FOR THE POINT Dallas Hunter got a taste of the point guard position toward the end of his sophomore year, and now he's ready for a full season running the show. "Last year I played point guard at the end of our season after starting as a small forward," Hunter said. "Point (guard) is probably my best position and that's where I like to play. You have the ball in your hands, you can distribute, penetrate and pass." more.... "I
want to be able to take over the game this year." Dante Cunningham
BOYD FEELING THE HEAT Unfair or not, some players can produce on the court without expending much effort. Iowa Western CC power forward Luthur Boyd is not one of those players. Boyd's level of play is often directly related to his effort, so when the 6-7 Chicago native underachieves, as he is doing now, the Iowa Western staff has the remedy. "He's the type of kid who needs someone to light a fire under his behind, and we're doing it," said Iowa Western assistant James Bankhead. more.... "Wade
is one tough, tough kid." Coach James Bankhead, on Wade Dunston
MILLARD GETTING HIGH-MAJOR LOOKS Chad Millard understands that his size and ball skills help create mismatches on the court in high school level, but is hopeful those wing skills will be equally as successful at the college level. "I think I will be more of a two, three player in college, and I use my height a lot in high school at small forward," Millard said. "I create a lot of mismatches, I'm pretty good at knocking down open jumpers, and I think I'm a good passer who creates opportunities and shots for myself. more....
FORWARD TRIBBETTS UP OPPONENTS Kent Tribbett created high expectations for himself entering his junior season, spelling out clear goals to lift his team and improve his ranking. "First off, I want to step up my defense to another level and be more active," Tribbett said. "I want to be more of a threat defensively, be a better rebounder, pick the right moves at the right time and finish and go to the hole better." more.... "... I like St. Louis a lot and it's only about
25-30 minutes away." Kevin Lisch
Fisher Switches Sports Charron Fisher just completed an outstanding year on the football field, but his favorite sport remains basketball. He is making the immediate transition to the hardwood. The 6-4, 230-pound SR F from Philadelphia (PA) Roman Catholic was named as one of the 40 nominees for the Maxwell Award, a football award that encompasses the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. In addition, Fisher was named a 1st Team All-Catholic League selection at outside linebacker, but basketball remains his first love. more....
BRIGHT LIGHTS SHINE IN DURHAM DURHAM, N.C. On a night when his touted team was taken to the edge by an upstart group from Philly, Roy Bright delivered big and led host Durham (NC) Mt. Zion to a 75-69 overtime win to capture the championship of the Bull City Classic. Bright, flanked by high-major prospects at every side, scored 23 points, heating up quickly and making some key plays in the final minutes to hold off Philadelphia (PA) Penn Charter. more....
YATES HAS EARLY FAVORITE He's just begun his junior season and Desmond Yates has seen his recruiting pick up. And while it's too early to gauge where he'll stand among his peers -- and in the eyes of coaches -- Yates already has identified a favorite school. "I like Tennessee. It's close to home and I don't want to go too far away," Yates said. more.... "... I like St. Louis a lot and it's only about
25-30 minutes away." Kevin Lisch
JUCO FORWARD RELIES ON HOPS Physically, at least, the game of a basketball consists of skills and athletic ability. Some players, like 6-7 post Jay MacFarland, depend heavily on one to compensate for shortcomings in the other. "He's not great with skills out there on the floor, but his athletic ability makes up for it," said Yavapai JC head coach Brooks Thompson. "He's a freak athlete. He's got these real lively legs, and he's just so strong. He's a Charles Barkley type. He'll get up and dunk and take people with him." more....
FORMER GOPHER OPEN Football players love physical contact. Basketball players, on the other hand, often rely on their agility to avoid collisions. Iowa Western JC point guard Kris Collins does both. Formerly of the gridirons of Texas, is a fullback in a point guard's clothing. The burly, 6-2, 210-pound bruiser motors up and down the floor like a locomotive, plows into the paint without fear and absorbs whatever punishment comes his way. more....
"... I will go anywhere, although I don't really like hot weather, so
as long as it's not too hot." - Chris Roberts
KRABBENHOFT TRIES THE POINT There aren't many 6-7 point guards, but Joe Krabbenhoft is taking a turn at the floor general spot this season. While he won't play the point in college, he believes the experience will help his understanding on the game. "I'm playing the point this year, but most schools see me as a two/three in college," Krabbenhoft told PrepStars.com. "They think I can handle the ball in certain situations, but I don't expect to play the point." more....
MORRISON HOPES TO REGAIN FORM Some players graduate from the playground to big-time college basketball only to struggle with the structured tempo. Marcus Morrison, a 6-5 WF from Tampa, experienced some of those difficulties last year before transferring from South Carolina to "go-go" Garden City Community College in Kansas. "He's just better in a more up-tempo system," said Garden City assistant coach Ted Shurtleff. more....
PROMISING TALENT BLOOMS DOWN SOUTH After a sophomore season in which he averaged 16 points and seven rebounds a game, Corey Bloom has led his New Orleans (LA) Brother Martin team to a 4-0 start thus far as a junior, averaging 16 points in the process. Bloom, a 6-5, 180-pound WG/WF, enjoys the reputation of a big-time perimeter shooter. more....
SUTTON ADDS NEW SPORT Jimmie Sutton is anxious to get back on the basketball court, but isn't at all doubting the choice he made to play football this fall. "We're in the regional finals and I will probably miss one or two basketball games if we win this friday," Sutton said. "This is my first year playing football and it was just an idea so that I could get more physical on the court. It seems to be working so far." more....
SATURDAY WAR: WRIGHT IS THE WAY MILFORD, Del. -- The talent level is extremely high here in Milford this weekend, but no one sends the reading off the chart like Dorell Wright. Wright, the super-athletic and smooth 6-7 WF at South Kent Prep, is an unstoppable scorer whose game will advance to an even higher plane once he gets stronger. On Saturday, Wright showed the local folk his whole bag of tricks, hitting threes, attacking the basket, knocking in fadeaways, making nice dishes on the break and skying for rebounds. more....
FRIDAY WAR: PLUMMER, SWANN STAR MILFORD, Del. -- It wasn't easy to pick one star from day one of the War on the Shore Prep Invitational, because seemingly every player had his ups and downs on opening night. That said, our vote goes to 6-7 Hargrave BF/WF Norman Plummer. The Dayton-bound forward came up big in a surprisingly tight game against St. Thomas More, scoring 27 points and snatching 10 rebounds for the winners. He was aided by teammate Isaiah Swann, who chipped in 24 points of his own. more....
The Prince of Basketball J.P. Prince has an early fondness for SEC and ACC basketball and his early school list is flavored thickly with schools from both those conferences, although a couple of schools have crashed the party. "My two favorite conferences are the SEC and ACC," Prince told PrepStars.com. "I like them both because they have competitive games, there are good schools and it is where I can get a good education." more....
Smith Narrows Focus Brandon Smith was a do everything type player last year at Minneapolis (MN) Henry, where his talents were utilized at several positions. "I think the big change this year for me is that I think I am handling the ball better and my rebounding has improved. Both of those two things have improved," Smith told PrepStars.com. "Last year I played several positions, really like two through four mostly, but this year I am going to play point guard and I want to play there." more....
"I guess the four schools ... would be Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi
State and Auburn." - Jarvis Hill
EMERALD CITY JUNIOR DRAWS MAJORS After getting overlooked for years, Seattle has emerged as a full-fledged hoops hotbed that produces top talent on a yearly basis. One of the most promising juniors is Marcus Williams, a standout from Seattle (WA) Roosevelt who is poised to add to the city's reputation. After a solid summer, the slender 6-6 (in bare feet) wing is drawing big-time attention. more....
WINSTON'S RECRUITMENT SMOKING It shouldn't come as a surprise that Little Rock (AR) Parkview standout Mark Winston feels like he's on top of the world. The 6-7 BF has personality to burn and as a two-sport threat who is also a highly regarded tight end in football, he has many options at his fingertips. "For football, it is Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Stanford, Ole Miss, Florida and Duke who are coming on," Winston said. "For basketball, it's Ole Miss, Southern Illinois, SMU, UTEP and Miami, and Tulsa is also coming on pretty strong." more....
LONG BEACH GETS THE JAZZ Having a relatively new staff and great energy around the program, Long Beach State was able to lure Jazz Henderson into the fold. Henderson, a 6-2, 180-pound guard from Eastfield (TX) JC, will take his game west for two years. "I think Long Beach was a great fit with the new staff and being youthful," head coach Chris Johnson of Eastfield said. "We always want our guys to go with the best fit for them and not necessarily the biggest school. They need scoring and they recruited him to score, and that's why he's going there." more....
ILLINOIS-CHICAGO GETS A STEAL It's the time of year no prep player really enjoys, the dreaded two-a-day practice sessions that mark the onset of the season. But for Omaha (NE) Central star Karl White, things are a little more bearable this time around. The 6-1 WG is the leader of a team that holds the preseason No. 1 state ranking, and he just made his college decision. more....
"Honestly, my final summer was terrible, absolutely terrible." - Dupree Fletcher
GRISSOM A SPRING POSSIBILITY Lowell Grissom isn't a name that's heard much as a potential high-major spring signee -- but based on his size alone, he deserves a higher profile. The 6-8 BF from Los Angeles (CA) Verbum Dei is self-described as a versatile post player. "Mostly, I'm a big man, but I have the ability to play outside on the wing, so I float around from the outside to the inside," Grissom said. more....
WATSON MAKING A NAME OF HIS OWN Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman junior WG/PG Kashif Watson isn't satisfied to simply follow in his brother's footsteps. While the footsteps left by older brother C.J., a former Bishop Gorman standout and current college sophomore running the show for Buzz Peterson at Tennessee, wouldn't be bad ones to follow, the younger Watson has his own game to showcase and his own trail to blaze. more....
"He is just an unbelievable shooter." - Brooks Thompson, on J.R. Reed
WASHINGTON PICKS HOKIES Finishing off his first recruting class at Virginia Tech, as he prepares to lead his club into the ACC, Seth Greenberg has signed Deron Washington, a 6-7, 190-pound WF from Ft. Washington (MD) National Christian Academy. Washington is the final member of the VT class, following 6-3 PG Marquie Cooke and 6-6 JUCO F Justin Holt, and joining those players was part of the reason Washington will take up residence in Blacksburg next year. more....
KIMBROUGH SHIFTS GEARS At 6-0,195 pounds, Jesse Kimbrough has the body befitting that of a football player -- and he was precisely that at Texas A&M, where Kimbrough redshirted as a freshman before making the move to another sport and another school, relocating to McLennan (TX) JC. "Jesse is strong and bench presses over 300 pounds, he only needs nine hours to graduate and he's just a steady-eddie on the floor," said McLennan assistant coach Anthony Fletcher. more....
BUTLER LEADS LATE SIGNINGS If Jackie Butler doesn't make it as a professional basketball player, he might have a future in show business -- he always seems to be in the news. more....
TWO CARRY LOAD FOR VINCENNES Head Coach Dan Sparks of Vincennes (IN) JC recognizes that his team's success this year will rest largely in the hands of guard Dale Parsons and froncourter Joplin Johnson. Parsons, a 6-0, 160-pound combo guard, is averaging 14 points per game through Vincennes' first five games, and according to Sparks, scoring is the strength of his game. more.... ...
I was getting some looks, but not really good ones. Anthony Fletcher, on Eric Dawson
COBBS HOPING TO REKINDLE INTEREST An injured abductor muscle nearly ended his high school career as a junior, but 6-6 WF/WG Richard Cobbs recuperated in time for his senior season in 2002-03. While he was prepared to answer any lingering doubts about his health, he wasn't expecting to play out of position. "I was completely healed during my senior year, but my coach decided to move me to the four, for some reason," Cobbs said. more....
CAMERON COMMITS, CRAWFORD NEXT Not content with a nationally ranked recruiting class under first-year coach Oliver Purnell, Clemson has made a significant catch from the Class of 2005 in Joey Cameron. Cameron, a 6-9 C/BF from Calere (AL) High who told us in a recent interview that he planned to commit soon, followed through on his intentions to decide early and picked the Tigers over interest from Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn and Oklahoma. more.... ...
I was getting some looks, but not really good ones. Avery Smith
BERRY RIPE TO BE PICKED Berry Jordan has taken a circuitous route to end up at Kilgore (TX) JC. Jordan signed with Arkansas out of high school and played as a freshman with the Razorbacks, starting at times. But he transferred after that year to Jacksonville University, where he sat out last season. This year, Jordan resides deep in the heart of Texas, applying his skills at Kilgore as a third-year sophomore with two years of Division I eligibility remaining. TOP 25 FALL RECRUITING CLASSES After Texas led the way throughout the spring and summer, in our view Indiana has compiled the best recruiting class this fall. The Hoosiers, spurred by a pair of All-Americans and three more players ranked in the national top 85, boast the nation's most talented class, top to bottom. The Longhorns obviously have a lot to be excited about as well. With a trio of players who could be named to the McDonald's All-American team next spring, Texas has four top-100 players of its own. more.... Location

LOWRY PICKS WILDCATS It took a while to sort itself out, but ultimately Villanova and Kyle Lowry made out pretty well. The Wildcats, which watched helplessly as summer point guard commitment Keith Benjamin de-committed and immediately pledged to Pittsburgh, won a key battle over Arkansas and others for floor general Lowry. more....
GUARD BURNS WITH DESIRE The timeline isn't going to play out quite like Draelon Burns had hoped. The 6-4, 200-pound WG at Laurinburg (NC) Institute Prep had hoped to sign this fall, but a lack of interest has forced him to wait until spring. "There's nothing really going on now," Burns said. "Creighton is calling me, Idaho is calling me, but those are about the only two. Hopefully after the early signing period, when all of the top players sign, I should get some more calls." more....
WATSON A JOLT OF ELECTRICITY Diminutive Seward County (KS) CC point guard Keoni Watson is proof that big things come in small packages. In fact, after Watson's first three games this season, it may be true that big scorers come in small packages. A pint-sized performer from San Diego, Watson leads Seward in scoring following a wild weekend jamboree (Nov. 7-9). The 5-8, 150-pound sparkplug scored 19, 38 and 28 points at the event, and thanks in large part to his stellar play, Seward managed a 2-1 record. more....
SIGNING DAY: PLEDGES TURN OFFICIAL Wednesday marks the opening of the fall signing period, and while most of the nation's top prospects already have made commitments, all those non-binding decisions finally can be made official, which is very newsworthy to college coaches, at the very least. Players such as DeMarcus Nelson (Duke) and Greg Stiemsma (Wisconsin), who pledged to their schools as sophomores, can formalize their commitments and be discussed publicly by their future head coaches. more.... ...

JOHNSON SEEKS WINTER EXPOSURE Most of Chris Johnson's recent basketball game experience has been logged during the spring and summer, but he's is looking to change that this winter. Johnson, a 6-11, 175-pound (!) BF/WF from Colonial Beach (VA) High, attended Middleburg (VA) Notre Dame Academy last year, where he played in just one game, according to Notre Dame coach Larry Cullinane. Johnson relocated closer to home to focus on his academics, and Colonial Beach head coach Steve Swope feels it's an advantageous situation for both parties. more....
EVERETT HAS MANY OPTIONS In an age of earlier and earlier specialization, California senior Marcus Everett is a bit of an anomaly: he plays two sports and he plays them well. Fall is reserved for hauling in passes and dodging tacklers as a standout wide receiver for West Hills (CA) Chaminade Prep, while winter is passed playing as a strong-bodied point guard. Unfortunately, Everett will almost certainly have to choose one sport to play at the college level, and the time is drawing near. more.... He's
definitely getting a lot more attention again since our first jamboree ...

MORE KEY COMMITMENTS In the end, Albert Weber's best decision was his first decision. Weber, a 6-4 WG at Durham (NC) Mt. Zion has reaffirmed his initial commitment to Alabama, choosing the Crimson Tide over Arkansas and Connecticut. Weber committed to Alabama early, but recently began to worry that he'd rushed his decision and opted to take official visits with the Razorbacks and Huskies. Weber is a big-time shooter and improved scorer off the dribble who certainly could've helped any of his three finalists. more....
COACHES POUR ON DE SOUZA Hatila De Souza has had a number of high-major scholarship offers this fall, but according to his coach at Laurinburg (NC) Institute, Rolando De la Barrera, De Souza will not sign until the spring period. more....
INTRODUCING: TOP-25 PLAYER PROFILES Back by popular demand, we've once again built extensive profiles of the nation's top-25 senior prospects. We know that many of our readers crave to learn as much about the very best players as possible, and everything you'd want to know -- including how each player has been ranked through the years -- is just a click away. more.... WILDCATS, TROJANS, COUGARS GET COMMITS Kentucky has cemented its relationship with Ramel Bradley, a 6-3 PG/WG and native of New York who's prepping at Bradenton (FL) Pendleton/IMG Academy this year. Bradley announced on Monday for the Wildcats over serious interest from Seton Hall, Boston College, Clemson, Pittsburgh, Georgia and others. The Wildcats are one of several schools to score key commitments in recent days. One of the best uncommitted big men, David Burgess, pledged to BYU. more....
THREE SCHOOLS LEAD FOR WEBER Albert Weber committed early to Alabama, and his increasing worry that he'd rushed his decision prompted him to back off that pledge this fall and take a look at other schools. Weber, a 6-4 WG from Durham (NC) Mt.Zion, has taken a couple of official visits the past two weekends to Connecticut and Arkansas, and now will plans to decide from among the Huskies, Razorbacks and Tide. more....
THORNTON PATIENTLY FIELDING INTEREST Josh Thornton is one of the better perimeter shooters in the junior class, so not surprisingly the 6-1, 160-pound PG from Camden (DE) Caesar Rodney has attracted early college interest. He already has a plan of how to approach his recruitment. "I'm wide open and whatever school comes my way, I'm just going to take some visits, see the area," Thornton said. "My decision is going to be a matter of factoring in a whole bunch of things." more....
MONTVERDE BREAKS ONTO SCENE Montverde (FL) Academy has been in existence since 1912 and is a true high school, not a prep school. But while this international school always has had an athletic program, it decided just this year to emphasize sports, and one key hire was basketball coach Kevin Sutton. Sutton, formerly of Forestville (MD) Bishop McNamara, has embarked on an ambitious schedule while keeping his team roster consistent with the flavor of the school. more....
BRICK: A LOOK AT 2004 BIG MEN This fall we've previously examined top guards and wings from the senior class. Our final positioner focuses on the big men (centers and big forwards) in the Class of 2004, which offers quite an impressive array of talent in this category. We prefer four inside operators in the senior class ‚ athletic Dwight Howard, muscular 6 Al Jefferson, versatile Marvin Williams and rangy LaMarcus Aldridge ‚ to any big man (including NBA first-round draftees Kendrick Perkins, Ndudi Ebi and Travis Outlaw) in the prep Class of 2003. more.... MALLOY, ALLEN COMMIT As a high school senior, Shawn Malloy signed with New Orleans before coming up short on academics and taking a two-year detour to junior college. But after considering all his options -- including some high-major interest this fall -- Malloy once again has picked the Privateers. Malloy, a 6-10, 230-pound BF/C from Chipola (FL) JC, had re-opened his recruitment this fall after transferring from Butler (KS) JC, but decided his original selection was the best choice. more....
LIVINGSTON PICKS DUKE After too many letters, evaluations, phone calls, interviews and prayers to list, Shaun Livingston has made his college decision. Livingston, arguably the nation's No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2004, has committed to Duke over finalists Illinois and Arizona. While no player could easily match the hype and expectations that have been heaped upon Livingston over the past year, the slender 6-6 PG/WG should at least come very close. more.... I

WILLIS RETURNS FROM VISIT NO. 2 Emanuel Willis got a late start on his official visits, taking his first trip -- to Cincinnati -- during the middle of October. And after taking only his second official last weekend to Virginia Tech, Willis now may even wait until spring to sign with the school of his choice. "I want to take some other visits," Willis said. "I'm pretty definite that I'm going to sign late." more....
WINTHROP MAKES A KILLEEN Jason Killeen is exactly the kind of rugged, physical post player many schools drool over, and playing for Larry Cullinane at Middleburg (VA) Notre Dame Academy has helped him improve his understanding of the game. And Greg Marshall's Winthrop program is the beneficiary, as Killeen has made a verbal commitment to the Eagles. "Jason is a strong offensive and defensive rebounder on both ends and his motor runs full time," Cullinane said. more....
SPRING DECISION LIKELY FOR GUARD Like many of his peers, Monroe Douglass had hoped to make a college decision sometime this fall. However, the 6-1 PG from St. Louis (MO) Chaminade is taking a different approach than the one he'd anticipated. "If I wanted to make decision right now, I couldn't," Douglass said. "So I think I'm going to wait until the spring." more.... I

LIBERAL STAR LETS IT FLY To say the last year was a little rough on Liberal (KS) High PG Antonio Hanson would be an understatement. The 6-1 junior moved to Liberal from Ft. Worth (TX) Dunbar last fall, only to return to Ft. Worth and then head back to Liberal this fall. Now that he is settled in, Hanson has started to field attention from several high-major programs. more....
CALIFORNIA JUNIOR ONE TO WATCH Whether slithering through congestion for a layup or directing his team from the top of the key, 6-1, 150-pound junior combo guard Darren Collison is perfectly comfortable in his own skin. He simply wishes there was a little more of it. A star at Etiwanda (CA) High, Collison has drawn early praise for his sheer skill. His ball-handling enables him to handle against pressure, and he also has filled up the net as a scorer. He's also a pretty fair defender thanks to his quick hands and feet. Physically speaking, however, he simply isn't strong enough. more....
ONE MORE VISIT FOR WING FORWARD Deron Washington now has made official visits to both Charlotte and Virginia Tech, and he'll likely travel to Mississippi before making his decision. Washington, a 6-7, 185-pound WF from Ft. Washington (MD) National Christian, returned this past weekend from a trip to Blacksburg "I think I want to take one more visit before I do anything," Washington said. more.... I

UCONN GETS TOP-10 TALENT One of the nation's most intriguing recruiting battles has ended, as top-10 forward Rudy Gay committed to Connecticut over co-finalist Maryland. CHARLESTON GETS NO. 4 Tommy Herrion's Charleston program added to its fall recruiting harvest with a commitment from 6-7, 210-pound WF Tavon Nelson of South Kent (CT) Prep. After earlier getting pledges from G Marcus Hammond, F/C Joshua Jackson and F Ben Brown, Herrion has added another frontcourt player in the hard-nosed Nelson, who played this past summer with the strong Cecil Kirk AAU program. more.... MOUNT ADDS FRONTCOURT HELP Head coach Milan Brown recently began practice as new boss at Mt. Head coach Bill Cochrane of Virginia Beach (VA) Salem confirmed that the 6-7, 245-pound Mitchell had pledged to Mt. St Mary's, and it was the comfort level reached by everyone close to Mitchell that tilted the scales in favor of the Mount. more....
AYERS A GREAT ALL-AROUND PACKAGE It takes very little time talking to Ft. Washington (PA) Germantown WF Ryan Ayers to realize that he's a special talent. "I (moved) for academics and I'm taking a two advanced classes so that I can have a higher GPA and make as high a score as I can on the SAT." more....
ROADRUNNERS SELVAGE GOOD CLASS His name doesn't roll off the tongue of recruitniks, but head coach Tim Carter and his Texas-San Antonio program have picked up a bonafide sleeper in post prospect Ray Selvage. Selvage, a rugged 6-7, 230-pound insider who attends Pearl River (MS) JC, pledged to the Roadrunners over interest from Troy State (only other official visit), North Texas, Southern Mississippi and Louisiana-Monroe. more....
DICKEY PICKS YELLOW JACKETS Ra'Sean Dickey narrowed his choices to Georgia Tech and Auburn, and the 6-9 BF/C committed to Paul Hewitt's Yellow Jackets over the Tigers. Dickey, a solidly-built and offensively talented forward, gives Georgia Tech a legitimate low-post scoring presence and a guy who can assist the size-starved Yellow Jackets on the boards. more....
SMITH TAKING HIS TIME Pulaski (TN) Giles County WF Tyler Smith is one of the top athletes in the junior class, as evidenced by the heavy recruiting attention he's drawing from across the country -- but he's in no hurry to close his list of schools or put together a top five. "He doesn't really have a list right now, he's just feeling everything out," said Billy Smith, Tyler's father. "He likes a lot of schools in different conferences, and has offers from UCLA to Miami, and everywhere in-between across the country." more.... I'd

NORTHERN FAVORS A PAIR One of the spring's bigger surprises, but who was absent from major summer events, was Daniel Northern, a 6-9, 196-pound BF from Perry (GA) Houston County. But not forgotten by high-majors despite his lack of visibility on the summer circuit, Northern returned from an official visit to an SEC school last week and now has two favorites. more....

CAMERON WANTS TO DECIDE EARLY Junior AL BF Joey Cameron is a unique player for a couple of reasons. First of all, Cameron is unique with what he does on the court, according to his high school coach Mike Turner. "At 6-8, a lot of people want players who can handle the ball like Josh Smith and those guys, but Joey's a straight power player who knows his strengths and limitations," Turner said. more.... It's

ALL HALE NEW MEXICO GUARD The state of New Mexico is known for several things, but producing basketball recruits isn't one of them. One very notable exception to that rule is Harvey Hale, a 6-4 combo guard at Albuquerque (NM) Rio Grande. A top-50 prospect in the junior class, Hale rattled off a long list of schools that have shown him early attention. more....
HORFORD TO FLORIDA Former Michigan commitment Al Horford has committed to Florida. Horford is a 6-9 C/BF at Grand Ledge (MI) High who'd pledged to the Wolverines but backed out this fall. MORRISON TRYING TO MAKE THE GRADE Ty Morrison has the kind of athleticism that usually draws high-major attention at a fair clip, but the Phoenix (AZ) Browne wing's recruitment has been slowed by another factor. "Oklahoma, Iowa State, and San Diego are recruiting me, and I'm still open," Morrison said. "But those are really the only schools that are recruiting me because of my grades." more....
BRIGHT, DUBOIS COMMIT Cincinnati took care of business over the weekend, getting a pledge from top-25 forward Roy Bright. Bright, a 6-5 star at Durham (NC) Mt. Zion, took his official visit and committed during the trip to the Bearcats over Iowa State, Tennessee, Miami and many others. Bright should fit in very well to the Bearcats' system. He's a big-time athlete and scorer who is ultra-aggressive on the offensive glass. He doesn't handle well enough to play guard and must improve defensively, but he has the ability to carry his team offensively when he's hot. more....
PETTWAY HAS MAJORS INTERESTED Aaron Pettway still is getting acclimated to the high recruiting interest, and while the process has been a bit daunting at times, he does seem sure of one thing heading into the season. "I definitely will sign late. Everything is just going too fast from the summer," Pettway said. "I still need to get a feel for everyone and there is too much pressure. I need to do more research and get more info on schools and see what they are all about. As the season moves along, I can see for myself what they are like and they can't lie." more....
DELANEY CHOOSES BLAZERS Paul Delaney felt that he wanted to reward those schools that stuck by him through an injury-plagued summer, and UAB second-year head coach Mike Anderson became the beneficiary when Delaney made a commitment to the Blazers. "I felt like at the Nike camp I did well, then I got hurt with a deep thigh bruise," Delaney said. "I didn't play the same after that and I couldn't show my skills. more.... I'm
not really thinking about juco or prep school. Steve Neal
ORR HAS COLLEGE, PRO OPTIONS Randy Orr comprises one half of Georgia Perimeter (GA) JC's towering frontcourt - the outside half. Orr operates on the outside, while his running mate, Jamahl Stokes, tends to business on the inside. While that arrangement really isn't all that unusual, Stokes and Orr may end up taking much different paths after this year. While Stokes is a solid Division I recruit, Orr may end up outside the United States altogether. more....
GALINDO, RAMON, OTHERS MAKE PLEDGES Oak Hill Academy's frontline will garner a lot of attention from opponents this season, and rightfully so. Led by Indiana commit Josh Smith, Louisville-bound big man Brian Johnson and Syracuse recruit Dayshawn Wright, the Warriors will boast a lethal inside/outside game unequaled by any high school team in the country. But to run the table undefeated against a national schedule, Oak Hill will need controlled play from uncommitted 6-2 PG Rajon Rondo. more....
STOKES A BIG GUY WORTH WATCHING Stocks and bonds are words frequently kicked about in financial markets, but Stokes and bonds -- as in 6-10 C Jamahl Stokes and the personal bonds he has formed -- are the key terms for some solid college programs this fall. Stokes, a wiry run/jump specimen from Georgia, entered the junior college ranks at Okaloosa-Walton (FL) JC following a modest high school career. Ultimately, however, Stokes elected to return home and enroll at Georgia Perimeter CC. more....

HOOPS IN THE HEARTLAND RECAP After A fantastic summer on the Nike Circuit, Iowa-based Martin Bros. Select reunited for one final go-round last weekend at the Hoops in the Heartland tourney, held in Iowa City on the campus of Iowa. Fittingly, the group led by the talented trio of Iowa commitment 6-8 BF Alex Thompson, 6-6 WF Jimmie Binnie and 6-1 PG Trent Meachum (both headed to Dayton) brought home one last championship. more....
CRANK, OTHERS COMMIT The Richmond Spiders have been very busy lately, and their good news continued when hard-working 6-9, 225-pound C Drew Crank of Lynchburg (VA) Glass committed and joined fellow 2004 recruits Jarhon Giddings (profiled Monday) and Monty Sanders, all who committed over the weekend. Crank will join a frontcourt class that includes Giddings out of Winston-Salem (NC) Reynolds and the 6-6,215-pound Sanders of Raleigh (NC) Cardinal Gibbons, who also pledged to the Spiders this weekend. more....
WHEATON, GIDDINGS COMMIT Matthew Wheaton has known for weeks now where he wanted to attend college. In fact, his college choice, Tulane actually suggested that he wait until his visit before making a commitment, so Wheaton took his official over the weekend and promptly gave his pledge. "I really had wanted to commit to Tulane even before my visit," Wheaton said. "They wanted me to come visit and see everything before I decided. Tulane has been my leader for awhile now, maybe for a month and a half or so." more....

GETTINGER PICKS UMKC Rich Zvosec and his Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos have been on the hunt for local talent over the last couple of years, and that hunt paid off over the weekend when they received a commitment from Overland Park (KS) Shawnee Mission South standout Brian Gettinger. Virtually unknown on the national level, the 6-8 Gettinger is a potential sleeper and should prove to be a very solid addition to the the Kangaroos' program. more....
JACKSON-WILSON TO THE BIG TEN This weekend kicked off the start of practice across the country for basketball programs, but it didn't slow down the pace of commitments as teams stayed busy garnering pledges. CUMMARD DOWN TO TWO Lee Cummard has made visits to his two finalists and cancelled a third to UCLA. The hard part now is deciding in which direction to go. "At Arizona State, it was a good chance to meet with the players and talk with them." more....
TELFAIR MAKES IT PUBLIC For all the hype, for all the hubbub that's surrounded the career of Sebastian Telfair, the Thursday press conference to announce his college decision may have been the most mundane exercise yet undertaken in his meteoric rise to national fame. For weeks -- no, months -- Telfair has appeared closely nestled to Rick Pitino's Louisville program, and the official announcement was devoid of any real suspense. Bassy is a Cardinal. more....
MAJORS FLOCK TO HANSBROUGH It used to be that a prized recruit took a phone call here or there from a coach, reporter or family member wondering where he might be leaning, but those days are long gone. In today's information-crazed world, the question isn't who's calling a player, but who isn't? Welcome to Tyler Hansbrough's world. The 6-9 junior BF from Poplar Bluff (MO) High is one of the most talented players in the Class of 2005 and is learning quickly about how to deal with the nonstop attention. more....

JUCOS TAKE STAGE AT JAMBOREE Fans familiar with the junior college scene know October is a big month. In anticipation of the season ahead, squads load up and travel to several jamboree events, most featuring 10-20 teams that scrimmage in round robin formats. Although they don't get to play in front of college coaches or tournament settings like their prep counterparts, there are still plenty of scouts and the word about the top players gets around. more....
THOMAS TO ARKANSAS; MORE COMMITMENTS Charles Thomas has gotten a taste of what it's like to play with Al Jefferson, and the versatile forward leaned on his familiarity with Jefferson as a factor in his somewhat surprising commitment to Arkansas over Florida State (the favorite), Mississippi, Georgia and others. "It really was a factor that Al (Jefferson) was going to be there, although he could still declare for the (NBA) draft," Thomas said. more....
TEMPLE HAS MUCH TO CONSIDER Heading into their senior season, most prospects face the question of not when, but where to start their college career. FLORIDA GOES BIG WITH NOAH Florida landed a key frontcourt commitment when Joakim Noah, a 6-10 BF/C from Lawrenceville (NJ) Prep, chose the Gators over interest from Villanova, Maryland, Seton Hall, Virginia, UCLA, Pitt, N.C. State, St. John's, Georgia and others. Noah will give Florida excellent versatility in the frontcourt. He'll need to get stronger to compete inside, but the agile big man already is a pretty good face-up shooter and is a persistent threat on the offensive glass thanks to hard work and good hands. more....
JOHNSON STARTING OVER Brandon Johnson spent most of the spring and summer preparing to make a fall decision, but his plans changed dramatically in wake of events this fall. "All of the schools that were recruiting me have gotten other players, I guess, so I will probably wait until spring," Johnson said. "I wanted to sign early, but I was either two or three on everyone's depth chart." more....
GUARD HAS NO RE-MORSE All good things must come to and end, or so the saying goes. Unfortunately, Willie Morse's marriage to hometown favorite Penn State ended prematurely. After committing to former PSU coach Jerry Dunn last year, Morse and the Nittany Lions decided to part company this past summer, leaving the 6-3 sniper unattached and wide open. Several suitors quickly filled the void, and Morse is happily evaluating all of his options once again. more....
FOSTER TO PICK SOON Very soon, Shane Foster will make one of three schools very happy. The 6-6 WF/WG from Kenner (LA) Bonnabel is on the verge of choosing among his final three schools of Georgetown, Vanderbilt or LSU, and the decision could come at any moment. Though he wasn't tipping his hand, the well-spoken, versatile athlete -- who had a huge summer -- took some time to examine each of his finalists more closely. more....

He visited the Vols and Sun Devils before making the trip to Blacksburg. more....
JUCO BIG MAN MAKES DECISION After taking a two-year sabbatical to Dodge City (KS) CC, Gary Ware will return to his roots for Division I college hoops. The native of Michigan has ensured that he'll take at least a couple trips each year to play in his home state, committing to a Big Ten program on Sunday. Ware, a 6-9 BF, is an explosive athlete who should become an immediate contributor in the frontcourt. more....
BONZANO A BIG WITH SKILLS Cerebral and highly skilled, Lon Morris (TX) JC big man Esteben Bonzano appears poorly suited for the rigors of interior play. Like most foreign-born forwards, the 6-10 native of Argentina excels at offense away from the rim. But Bonzano also realizes that his finesse floor game may have limitations beyond the junior college level, and that explains why he's determined to play tougher in the post this season. more....
LATHAM A BIG-TIME ATHLETE Last year was a tumultuous one for Indian Hills (IA) CC wing forward Maurice Latham. The Norfolk, Va., product failed to shoot the ball consistently, which allowed opposing defenses to adapt to his slashing, athletic moves to the basket. But heading into this season, after a summer of endless repetition, Latham proudly wears a newfound confidence -- and he hopes that translates into better shooting. more....
HEMINGWAY BACK FOR YEAR TWO One of the more underrated point guards available is Akeem Hemingway, a 6-1, 175-pounder at Fork Union (VA) Military, who is back for a second year under coach Fletcher Arritt. "Once I got here I worked hard, and to tell you the truth I thought that it was gonna be easy," Hemingway told PrepStars.com. "But I learned so much basketball that I thought if I came for another year, and actually learned more and not use any college eligibility, then I'm all for it." more....
LANGFORD FORCED TO OPEN IT UP Now that the recruiting cookie has crumbled for many top schools, Kevin Langford has been left to pick up the pieces. Langford, a 6-8, 215-pound BF who had a solid list of schools and hoped to sign next month, has watched as several schools have gotten other players at his position. "Most of the schools that I was most involved with stopped recruiting me," Langford told PrepStars.com. "They picked up other players, but I'm not too disappointed. Whatever happens, happens." more....

FORWARD ENJOYS RECRUITING ATTENTION Standing 6-6 and weighing in a muscular 230 pounds, McPherson (KS) High standout Jordan Fithian makes for a rather imposing sight on the soccer field, where he moonlights as a goalie. But he's also pretty imposing in a more expected place, the basketball court. Already an all-state performer who carries a couple of state championship rings in his pocket, Fithian is a bruising combo forward who has attracted widespread attention. more....
RICH, JOHNSON MAKE DECISIONS Leonard Hamilton proved earlier this fall he could go toe to toe with a heavyweight program, beating out UConn and others for Isaiah Swann, and on Thursday Hamilton's Seminoles chopped big lumber again, besting Kentucky for top guard Jason Rich. "Virginia called today and they want to schedule a visit next week." more....
GUYTON FORCED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENT It's almost commonplace in baseball: a flame-throwing power pitcher injures his arm and is forced to change his approach, learning to depend on control to be successful. Allen Guyton, a second year point guard at Lon Morris (TX) JC, is the hardwood version of that player. Entering his final season of high school ball, Guyton ranked among the top point guard prospects in the state of Texas. The bouncy six-footer with jack rabbit quickness was the consummate lead guard; he could score, distribute and defend. Many observers in Texas viewed Guyton as a possible big-timer. more....
JAMES MADISION GOES FISHING After earlier getting a pledge from 6-4 WG Chris Matthews, the James Madison Dukes have picked up a second fall pledge, adding 5-11, 177-pound PG Albert Fisher from Pennsauken (NJ) High. Fisher is a relatively unknown player who spent much of the summer in the shadow of touted DaJuan Wagner Rising Stars teammate Charron Fisher. Despite his lack of reputation, however, Fisher is a solid pickup for a Dukes program coming off a 13-17 season under Sherman Dillard. more....
COOKE LEADS COMMITMENT PARADE First-year Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg hasn't yet tasted the Big East wars with his Hokies, but he already has landed his first recruit as an ACC head man. As expected, Suffolk (VA) Nansemond River 6-3 PG Marquie Cooke pledged for the Hokies Wednesday afternoon over co-finalist Clemson. Cooke is the first player to commit to Tech since the announcement of the conference reshuffling that will send the Hokies to the ACC next year. more....

COOKE TO ANNOUNCE TODAY Marquie Cooke, a 6-3, 200-pound PG from Suffolk (VA) Nansemond River, has scheduled a 3:00 press conference on Wednesday at his high school to announce his college selection between Virginia Tech and Clemson. Cooke took an official visit to Virginia Tech September 18-19 for a Thursday night football game against Texas A&M, but he canceled a trip to Clemson scheduled for this weekend, so all signs point to the Hokies. more....

Williams, who averaged 11.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and almost four blocks per game as a freshman, is a Chicago native and chose the Cowboys over offers from Auburn, hometown Depaul and Texas A&M. more....

CARR PICKS CYCLONES After suffering a recent disappointment recently when top target Roy Bright did not follow through with an expected commitment, Iowa State has taken one to the house -- or the car -- in point guard Tasheed Carr, Bright's teammate at Durham (NC) Mt. Zion. Carr, a 6-4, 200-pound PG, committed to Iowa State over St. Joe's, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Temple. A high comfort level with the Cyclone coaches steered Carr to ISU. more....
MIDNIGHT MADNESS RECAP The premise is simple: combine academic preparation with a show-stopping, one-day exhibition of top talent. That's the thinking employed by Rick Barrett, the founder of New Jersey Gym Rat Midnight Madness. Year after year, elite players descend upon New Jersey to participate in Princeton Review SAT workshop, followed by the day's main event -- the Midnight Madness All-American game. Alums of the event include Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Antoine Walker, Stephon Marbury and a host of other NBA standouts. more....
BRIGHT KEEPING OPTIONS OPEN Roy Bright was prepared to make a commitment and had narrowed his list of schools to Iowa State and Tennessee, with the Cyclones expecting to receive the commitment. But at the last minute, Bright got cold feet and decided to re-open his recruitment. "I didn't feel comfortable making the decision to go to the school I was going to," Bright said. more....
(SMU) is a great school and that's the biggest reason (I committed).

SWANN LEADS WEEKEND COMMITS Once the offer was extended, you knew it was going to be tough for Oregon, Washington or anyone else to knock off UCLA in the race for Josh Shipp. Shipp, a 6-6 WF/WG from Los Angeles (CA) Fairfax, committed to the Bruins over interest from the Ducks, Huskies, Boston College, Stanford and others. Shipp is yet another feather in the cap of first-year UCLA coach Ben Howland, who's wasted no time in locking up a big-time recruiting class for the Bruins. more....
JUCO BIG MAN FAVORS FIVE The juco crop of big men this year is strong, including Taj Gray, E.J. Drayton, Jason Parker, Justin Williams and others, and another name for the high-major list is Gary Ware. Ware, a 6-9 BF at Dodge City (KS) CC who emerged from Detroit (MI) Finney, already has made four official visits -- and he's taking No. 5 this weekend. more....
I've had the most contact at this point with Creighton. Draelon Burns
SHIPP TO BRUINS; ALLEN DOWN TO TWO Once the offer was extended, you knew it was going to be tough for Oregon, Washington or anyone else to knock off UCLA in the race for Josh Shipp. Shipp, a 6-6 WF/WG from Los Angeles (CA) Fairfax, committed to the Bruins over interest from the Ducks, Huskies, Boston College, Stanford and others. Shipp is yet another feather in the cap of first-year UCLA coach Ben Howland, who's wasted no time in locking up a big-time recruiting class for the Bruins. more....
PEDIGREED SMITH HOPING FOR PREP SCHOOL GAIN At the end of last year Brian Smith decided that his game needed development, so he took a look around and opted to attend Fork Union (VA) Military Academy this for extra seasoning. Smith, a 5-11, 165-pound PG, attended Lexington (KY) Catholic last year. He also is the son of Kentucky head coach Tubby Smith. His hoops pedigree is clearly evident as Smith shows good poise and an inherent feel for the game. more....
HORFORD BACKS OFF; OU GOES GRAY For the second time this year, Michigan has lost a prized recruit -- at least for now. Al Horford, who committed to the Wolverines earlier this fall, has rescinded his pledge to Michigan and now is considering U-M, Michigan State and Florida. Elsewhere, Kelvin Sampson's Oklahoma Sooners worked hard and fast on elite juco Taj Gray, a 6-8 BF at Redlands (OK) JC, and their work has paid off in a commitment. more....

"I see myself fitting in and liked the school, surroundings and players." more....
MORROW, MONK, FINGER COMMIT Georgia Tech needed shooters, and the Yellow Jackets have landed two this week. State, Charlotte and Tennessee. Morrow is solid athletically and handling the ball on the perimeter, but clearly his role for Tech will be to fire in long-range jumpers. more....

KAUN PICKS JAYHAWKS Bill Self continues to prove that he's one of the nation's best recruiters. As expected, the first-year Kansas coach has added his best recruit yet since taking the reigns in Lawrence, 6-11 C Alexander Kaun. Kaun, a native of Siberia who's prepping at Melbourne (FL) Florida Air, is one of the most physical and relentless big men in the nation. He battles hard for post position on every play -- and typically more than once during each possession -- and when he gets the ball he immediately makes a strong move for the basket. more....
