EAST COAST PAIR COMMITS

By Rob Harrington and Eric Woods

October 23, 2003

Two high-major prospects on the East Coast made commitments, and they'll be playing their college ball many miles from each other. Ronald Ramon, a 6-0 PG from Bronx (NY) All Hallows, committed to Pittsburgh, while 6-7 WF/BF Alex Galindo, a star at Newark (NJ) St. Benedict's, chose UTEP.

Ramon, who had been expected to announce for nearly two weeks, chose the Panthers over Providence and Rutgers. The skilled, crafty handler is a good playmaker and accomplished outside shooter, if not an elite run/jump athlete. He should be a very capable floor general in the Big East.

Galindo, a top-150 national prospect, is a slender scorer who had an up and down summer but is a good athlete with above average scoring tools. He definitely needs to get stronger and become more consistent, but he's a pretty solid outside shooter and most effective running the floor and scoring in the transition game. He picked the Miners over interest from (though some schools went in different directions) Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Villanova, N.C. State and others.

ROBERSON STILL OPEN

One of the murkier recruiting situations for a top-200 kid is that of Lamar Roberson, a 6-6, 190-pound WF who transferred from Louisiana to Compton (CA) Dominguez this fall.

Making a late school change -- especially one out of state -- always can create uncertainty on an academic transcript, but Roberson said his grades are "much improved" at Dominguez.

Roberson said he'd like to move back toward the South for college, and expressed interest in Mississippi State and Miami. He'll certainly play with excellent teammates this year, as he'll be joined by talented players like Brian Harvey, Mike Boyd and A.J. Tolbert.

NOTES

One junior the strong academic schools should monitor is Matt Terrell, a 6-3 WF/WG from Manhattan (NY) Trinity Prep. Terrell boasts a very strong GPA and is trying to prove this season that's a pretty good hoopster as well. ...
