SINGLETARY CHOOSES CAVSBy Rob Harrington
Aftering entering the spring without any answers at the point guard position, Virginia has fully addressed its backcourt situation for the next few years. The Cavaliers picked up a critical early commitment when Sean Singletary chose Pete Gillen's program over interest from Rutgers, Indiana, Ohio State and others. Singletary, a 6-0 PG at Philadelphia (PA) Penn Charter, is a broad-shouldered athlete who's a strong driver and capable three-point shooter. He didn't have a great weekend with The Playaz club program at the recent Tournament of Champions, but Singletary proved at other spring events that he's one of the nation's top 100 rising senior prospects. While having a talented scoring point guard is certainly welcome, what Virginia has needed is a true floor general who can steady the ship -- and Singletary fits the bill. He does commit an occasional wild turnover, but he's generally in control of the game and an alert -- and unselfish -- passer. Singletary also has very good defensive potential and at times has really impressed with his ability to lock up his man and use his quick hands to strip big men in the post. Singletary will compete in the backcourt with the Cavaliers' late Class of 2003 signee, PG T.J. Bannister.
