UPDATED TOP 25 AAU POLLBy Jeff Goodman
Here's the latest version of the first-ever, comprehensive Top 25 AAU Poll. This week's updated poll has plenty of N.Y. flavor up top and has plenty of wholesale changes. Remember, state AAU results will not be used in this poll and major tournaments, obviously, will be weighed heavily. If you have complaints, suggestions or corrections e-mail Jeff Goodman at JGood67213@aol.com - but remember to take it easy on us, because this really is a mammoth undertaking. Enjoy! 1. Gauchos (Bronx, N.Y.) ‚ (16-3) *NR Results: Beat YOMCA, 85-57, to win the Kingwood Classic; Defeated Team Texas, 79-59, in the semis; Beat Nike Team Florida, 75-69, in the quarterfinals; Beat Arizona Stars, 64-56; Defeated Louisiana Panthers; Beat Florida Prepstars; Beat North Texas Rice Owls. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the first round of the Gold Division at Boo Williams
Coach: Julius Allen/Paul Brown/Gary Sims
Starters: WG-WF Sundiata Gaines (6-3, SR, #23); PG Ronald Ramon (6-0, SR, #3); F James Barrett (6-5, SR, #32); F-C Curtis Kelly (6-9, SOPH, #21) Others: G Teddy Mack (6-3, SR, #20); G Lawrence Gavin (6-4, SR, #22); F Mike Davis (6-8, JR, #34); F Taj Gibson (6-7, SR, #42); G Richard Forbes (6-0, SR, #1); WG/WF Jamal Webb (6-5, SR, #25) Notes: We're ready to admit we made a major mistake by overlooking the Gauchos in the previous poll and they proved us wrong with a convincing title at the Kingwood Classic. Robinson put up 21 points, including four first-half trifectas, in the championship game against YOMCA, and he also had 20 against Team Texas, 17 vs. Nike Team Florida and 18 in the win over the Arizona Stars. Some have shied away because he's only 6-2, but Georgia Tech and St. John's are the two leaders as of now. Gaines, who is looking at Pittsburgh, BC and Providence, had 15 against AZ Stars and 14 in the win over Team Florida. Ramon is often overlooked, but he's the glue and is receiving interest from Pittsburgh, Seton Hall and Providence. Ramon (ankle) and Kelly didn't play in the loss to the St. Louis Eagles at Boo Williams. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Memorial Day Classic (Bloomington, Ind.) 2. Riverside Church (New York, N.Y.) - (12-2) *1 Results: Lost to YOMCA, 64-51, in the second round of the Kingwood Classic; Beat Breakdown; Defeated Jersey Cyclones Blue; Beat Houston Superstars Elite. Tournament Finishes: Won Boo Williams Gold
Coach: Kenny Pretlow/Hakiem Yahmadi
Starters: C Derrick Caracter (6-9, 270, SOPH, #32); SG Keith Benjamin (6-2, SR, #11); BF Tyrell Biggs (6-6, 270, JR, #33); PF Arturo Dubois (6-6, 230, SR, #21) Others: WF Dexter Gray (6-5, SR, #42); PG Desean Gist (6-2, SR, #10); F Shanty Robinson (6-5, SR, #44); WG-WF Jason Holmes (6-4, SR, #23); PG Brett Loscalzo (6-0, SR, #25); G Willis Kettrell (6-3, SR, #31); G Johnathan Smith (6-2, JR, #22) Notes: After taking home the crown at Boo Williams, Pretlow's club was knocked off early at Kingwood by YOMCA, which advanced to the title game. A.J. Price, who likes St. John's, N.C. State, Virginia, Rutgers and UNC, earned MVP honors at Boo Williams and played well in Houston. Dubois led the club with 18 while Price finished with 13 in the loss to YOMCA. Next Tournaments: May 16-18 Five-Star Classic (Boston); May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 3. Team Texas (Rowlett, Texas) - (12-3) *6 Results: Lost to the Gauchos, 79-59, in the semifinals at the Kingwood Classic; Beat Arkansas Wings, 55-50, in the quarterfinals; Defeated DTA, 69-68; Beat Houston Select; Defeated Georgia Elite II; Beat Houston Lynx Tournament Finishes: Won Tops ëN Texas; Lost in the Boo Williams Gold Division semifinals.
Coach: Darryl Horton/Wes Grandstaff
Starters: PG Jason Horton (6-1, 170, SR, #12); WF Rell Porter (6-7, 187, SR, #33); BF Kevin Langford (6-8, 205, SR, #31); WG Collin Dennis (6-3, SR, #23) Others: G Evan Risher (6-2, SR, #10); G Antwaun Harris (6-2, SR); WG-WF Matt Holland (6-5, SR, #5); Pavlius Packevicius (6-9, SR, #42); G Andrew Douthit (6-3, SR, #3); G Ced Griffin (6-3, SR, #25); G Ben Bell (6-2, SR, #22) Notes: Aldridge dropped 20 against the Arkansas Wings and had 22 in the loss to the Gauchos and then made a decision to commit to Texas less than 24 hours later. Packevicius should turn out to be a good get for someone. He scored 11 in the loss to the Gauchos. Horton played his usual unselfish brand of team ball, but wore down towards the end of the tournament after logging so many minutes. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 4. Jackson Tigers (Jackson, Miss.) - (9-1) *7 Results: Beat Jackson Panthers, 65-49, to win the Tiger Jam (Miss.); defeated Boo Williams, 57-40, in the semifinals; Beat Lighthouse All-Stars (Miss.), 82-70; Defeated Georgia Ballers, 88-67; Beat Memphis Bobcats, 77-59; Defeated Mississippi Wildcats, 88-59. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the Boo Williams Gold Division quarterfinals; Won the Tiger Jam.
Coach: Larry Stamps
Starters: BF Charles Rhodes (6-8, 220, SR, #44); PG Charlie White (5-11, SR, #1); SG Bobby Clark (6-5, 180, SR, #22); WF Charles Thomas (6-7, 210, SR, #33) Others: BF Mekel Marshall (6-8, 240, SR, #42); WG-WF Kevin McCoy (6-4, SR, #21); PG Bryant Spiller (6-2, SR, #11); G Marves Fairley (6-2, SR, #31); G Michael Hoover (6-2, SR, #23); G Chad Hardy (6-2, SR, #32) Notes: Jefferson dominated as the Tigers won their own tournament, the "Tiger Jam", by beating the Jackson Panthers in the title game and Boo Williams in the semis. Jefferson had 28 points and 13 boards in the title game and put up 30 and 15 in the semis. Charles Thomas averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 boards in the final two games while Bobby Clark shot it well in the tournament. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 5. Nike Team Florida (St. Petersburg, Fla.) - (9-2) *8 Results: Lost to the Gauchos, 75-69, in the Kingwood Classic quarterfinals; Beat Belmont Shore, 69-60; Defeated SoCal All-Stars; Defeated Fort Worth Lions; Beat Illinois Wolves; Defeated Team NCI Hoop Stars (Texas) Tournament Finishes: Lost in the Boo Williams Silver Division finals
Coach: Tom Topping
Starters: WF Keith Brumbaugh (6-9, JR, #22); C Alexander "Sasha" Kaun (6-11, 245, SR, #44); PG Earnest "Trey" Hopkins (6-1, SR, #11); BF Andrew Reed (6-8, SR, #31) Others: PG Walter Hodge (6-0, JR, #10); BF-C Robinson Louisme (6-8, 255, SR, #42); F Zaronn Cann (6-6, 220, JR, #23); F Greg Carr (6-6, SR, #4); G Mario Sisinni (5-10, JR, #1); G-F Braxton Williams (6-5, SR, #20); F David Kilgore (6-9, SR, #32) Notes: Jason Rich established himself as a legitimate McDonald's All-American in Houston -- not only with an improved outside shot, but with unmatched leadership qualities. Kaun showed that when he's healthy, there may not be many better pure post in the country. Brumbaugh is a tough matchup -- he's long, can shoot the 3 and did a better job of taking it to the basket as the tournament wore on. Rich had 18 against the Gauchos and averaged 19.3 points and 5.3 boards in the tourney, Kaun finished with 17 and averaged 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds while Brumbaugh scored 15 in the loss to the Gauchos and put up 17.3 points and 5.7 boards per game. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 6. Sports Academy (Baton Rouge, La.) - (10-2) *3 Results: Lost to the Illinois Warriors in the second round at the Kingwood Classic; Beat Atlanta All-Stars; Defeated Indiana White; Beat Houston Hoop Dogs. Tournament Finishes: Won the Texas Classic title
Coach: Collis Temple
Starters: WF Tasmin Mitchell (6-7, JR, #55); G-F Early Doucet (6-3, SR, #23); G Garrett Temple (6-6, 170, SR, #41); G Curtis West (6-0, SR, #22) Others: WG Anthony Kimble (6-2, SR, #15); G Tony Johnson (6-0, SR, #12); G Anwar Johnson (6-3, SR, #10); PG Chris Davis (5-7, SR, #11); WG-WF Larry Anderson (6-3, SR, #44); F Sean Bridgewater (6-4, SR, #4) Notes: Glen "Big Baby" Davis & Co. couldn't pull off the double-dip in the Lone Star state after winning the Texas Classic the week before, but they got upset by a solid Illinois Warriors squad. Davis once again proved he's an elite player who can virtually do it all, including pass out of the double team better than just about anyone. Don't be surprised if he plays D-1 hoop instead of football next year. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions; State AAU (May 30) 7. YOMCA (Memphis, Tenn.) - (8-2) *18 Results: Lost to Gauchos, 85-57, in the title game of the Kingwood Classic; Beat California Team Select, 57-55, in the semifinals; Defeated DC Blue Devils, 57-55, in the quarterfinals; Beat Riverside Church, 64-51; Defeated Fox Valley Skillz; Beat ARC (Cal.); Defeated Texas Ambassadors. Tournament Finishes: Did not advance past pool play at Boo Williams despite going 2-1 because of tiebreakers.
Coach: Keith Easterwood/Bobby Dodd
Starters: F Shawne Williams (6-8, 215, SR, #10); SG Charles Hampton (6-2, 180, SR); F Jerrell Houston (6-8, 200, SR); WG-WF Jonathan Ball (6-4, SR, #23) Others: BF Keiron Jackson (6-9, 220, SR); BF Frank Holmes (6-8, 205, SR, #44); WF David Jackson (6-5, SR); WG-WF Rorey Lawrence (6-5, SR) Notes: YOMCA had a different leading scorer for each of its final four games in advancing to the championship contest at Kingwood. Charles Hampton, an athletic guard who is also a football star, had 15 in the win over Riverside Church. Andre Allen scored 17 against the DC Blue Devils, Shawne Williams, who likes Memphis and Houston, finished with 19 in the victory over California Team Select. Jerrell Houston managed 9 to lead the club in the loss to the Gauchos. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 8. St. Louis Eagles (St. Louis, Mo.) - (9-4) *2 Results: Lost to Portland Legends in the semifinals of the Howard Pulley Tournament; Beat Wisconsin Playground Warriors; Lost to KC Rocktown; Defeated Minnesota Select; Defeated Portland Legends; Lost to Dallas Mustangs in the first round of the Kingwood Classic playoffs; Beat Houston Hardballers; Defeated Arkansas Angels. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the Gold Division finals at Boo Williams
Coach: Eric Long
Starters: BF Matt Shaw (6-7, 220, SR, #33); WF/WG Tommy Liddell (6-5, 180, SR, #22); WG Xavier Price (6-3, 180, SR, #11); PG Monroe Douglass Jr. (5-11, 160, SR, #1) Others: WG/WF Terry Evans (6-4, 185, SR, #12); F Brandon Rush (6-7, JR, #44, #25) BF/C Drew Richards (6-9, 215, SR, #25); PG/WG Aaron Jackson (6-3, 170, SR, #21); BF Tyler Hansborough (6-8, 210, JR), #42; WG Cameron Murkey (6-3, 190, SR, #5); PG Tommie House (5-10, 170, SR, #3); SG Trevor Stone (6-2, 170, SR, #10) Notes: The Eagles had trouble without big men Kalen Grimes in Houston and were upset by the Dallas Mustangs in the first round of the playoffs. Grimes had 16 in the quarterfinal win at Howard Pulley, but the Eagles got knocked off by the Portland Legends in the semis. Matt Shaw had 15 in the pool-play win over Portland and also scored a team-high 19 in the loss to KC Rocktown. Next Tourney: May 16-18 St. Louis Invitational (Mo.); May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 9. Richmond Squires (Richmond, Va.) - (6-1) *9 Results: Idle (their second team attended the Charlie Weber Tournament in D.C.) Tournament Finishes: Lost in the title game of the Texas Classic
Coach: Tony Squires/Floyd Brooks/J.J. Myers
Starters: WG Joe Posey (6-5, 190, SR, #3); WG-WF Glen Dandridge (6-6, 195, SR, #24); Cameron Stanley (6-6, 200, SR, #20); BF Bombale Osby (6-7, 235, SR, #00) Others: PG Brandon Freeman (6-4, 190, SR, #12); WG-WF Laimis Kisielius (6-6, SR, #4); F Jaron Giddens (6-9, 230, SR, #22); PG Brandon Clayton (6-3, SR, #11); C Ben Brown (6-10, SR, #43) Notes: Squires' team doesn't have a whole lot of size, but they can flat-out shoot the ball. The top team had a week off after losing in the championship game to Sports Academy at the Texas Classic. Posey was on fire in the Lone Star state with 18 - on six 3-pointers - in the title game. He also had 21 against the Tallahassee Wildcats. Cameron Stanley sat out the tournament with a shoulder injury and Dandridge was forced to leave the championship game with an ankle injury. Next Tourney: May 9-11 Southern Invitational (Va.) 10. D.C. Blue Devils (Adelphi, Md.) - (8-2) *4 Results: Lost to YOMCA, 57-55, in quarterfinals of the Kingwood Classic; Beat Dallas Mustangs, 74-59; Defeated Louisiana Select; Beat St. Louis Gators; Defeated North Texas Tournament Finishes: Won Silver Division at Boo Williams
Coach: Rob Jackson
Starters: G Isaiah Swann (6-2, 187, SR, #4); F James Gist (6-7, 205, SR, #21); WG-WF Cheyenne Moore (6-5, 175, SR, #22); G Eric Price (6-1, JR, #3) Others: F Davis Nwankwo (6-8, 220, SR, #32); BF-C Peter Prowitt (6-10, 245, SR, #42); SG Marcus Ginyard (6-4, 175, JR, #10); C Roy Hibbert (7-1, SR, #34); G Justin Castleberry (6-2, JR, #11); G Brad Ferrell (6-5, SR, #25); G Tywon Lawson (5-10, SOPH, #1); G Mike Creppy (6-0, SR, #20); F Mike Freeman (6-8, JR, #31) Notes: The Blue Devils, our preseason No. 1 team in the land, just haven't put it all together yet. They were without do-everything forward Davis Nwankwo and 7-footer Roy Hibbert in Houston. Isaiah Swann had 21 in the win over the Dallas Mustangs, but it was forward James Gist Jr. who turned out to be the team's top player for much of the tournament. Gist, normally a dominating defensive presence, scored 17 against Dallas. Brian Johnson, who is favoring UNC, had 17 in the loss to YOMCA. Nwankwo won't be playing with the team any longer because of academic responsibilities while Hibbert won't be back until after school concludes. Lawson should return from a broken finger at the end of this month. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 11. Tim Thomas Playaz (Paterson, N.J.) - (26-2) *5 Results: Lost to N.Y. Elite in the quarterfinals of the Charlie Weber (D.C.); Beat Cecil Kirk; Defeated Team Richmond. Tournament Finishes: Lost in quarterfinals at Charlie Weber (D.C.); Won Spring Fest (own tourney); Won Jam Fest (R.I.)
Coach: Jimmy Salmon
Starters: WF Dave McClure (6-5, 195, SR, #15); PG Sean Singletary (5-10,
170, PG, #14); BF Taj Finger (6-8, 200, SR, #31)
Notes: McClure will likely return this weekend at the Southern Invitational after missing most of the past month with mono. Salmon will also get Galindo back after a two-week absence in which he missed Charlie Weber and the Texas Classic. They were sorely missed, especially on the boards, for the past two tournaments. Next Tourney: May 9-11 Southern Invitational (Va.); May 16-18 Five-Star Classic (Boston); May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 12. Arkansas Hawks (Ark.) - (4-1) *11 Results: Idle. Tournament Finishes: Quarterfinals of the Texas Challenge
Coach: Bill Winston
Starters: BF Mark Winston (6-6, 220, SR, #12); F Mike Smith (6-6, SR, #32);
PG Brandon Patterson (6-5, SR, #30); WG Zac McGrath (6-3, SR, #21)
Notes: Monk and Winston are both names that have hit the national circuit, but it was Smith who came up big at the Texas Challenge as a point forward who caused matchup problems. Smith had 18 vs. Southeast Pump 'N Run while Monk added 17 and Winston finished with 15 points and 11 boards. The versatile Monk is looking at Arkansas, Florida, BC, Kansas, Stanford, Oklahoma, UConn and Northwestern. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 13. Philly MJC (Philadelphia, Pa.) ‚ (10-2) *NR Results: Beat Dajuan Wagner Rising Stars, 62-53, to win Spiece; Defeated The Family, 85-69, in the semis; Beat Ft. Sooy, 72-64, in quarterfinals; Beat Spiece Blue Demons, 74-65; Beat Compton Magic (Calif.); Defeated Martin Brothers (Iowa); Beat Indiana Red (Ind.); Defeated Wisconsin Force Red. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the playoffs at the Texas Classic
Coach: Lonnie Lowry/Rick Clancy
Starters: F Shane Clark (6-7, JR); PG Antoine Brown (6-2, SR); BF Shawn Sabb (6-6, SR); BF Delton Morgan-Hines (6-6, SR)
Notes: Lowry was sensational in the Spiece tournament and earned MVP honors after capping it off with a 18-point performance in the title game and putting up 41 in the semis against The Family. Clark and Lowry are teammates at Cardinal Dougherty High. Next Tourney: May 23-25 at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 14. Athletes First (Oklahoma City, Okl.) - (0-0) *13 Coach: Gary Vick/Kermit Holmes
Starters: PG Clent Stewart (6-3, 170, SR, #10); WF Quentin Chaney (6-6,
180, SR, #32); G A.J. Hawkins (6-4, SR, #20); F David Godbold (6-5, SR, #4)
Notes: Jackson is a monster inside and has drawn the attention of numerous high-major schools, including Kansas and Oklahoma. Stewart is a consummate point guard, but is coming back from a broken foot and may not be at 100 percent for the early part of the summer. Chaney barely played last year because of a shoulder injury - he's a good athlete who has also been pursued by the locals (OU and OSU) for football. Haymaker is one of the top rising sophomores in the nation and should see some time on the under-17 squad. Opening Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (the state won't allow its teams to compete until May 18) 15. BABC (Boston, Mass.) - (7-3) *14 Results: Idle. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the Boo Williams Gold Division title game; Lost in the Adidas Hoop Challenge (Conn.) title game.
Coach: Leo Papile
Starters: BF-C Jeff Adrien (6-6, SR, #51); PG Justin Dick (5-9, 170, SR,
#4); WG Gerry Corcoran (6-4, SR, #22); WF Colby Santos (6-5, JR, #33)
Notes: Gerry Corcoran can flat-put light it up and he showed it with a 24-point performance and six trifectas in the win over The Family at Boo Williams. Big man Jeff Adrien, one of the most underrated guys around, added 14 in the victory. Corcoran had 17 and point guard Chris Vetrano added 13 in the semifinal setback to Riverside Church. The starting point guard, Justin Dick, didn't make the trip to Boo. Next Tournaments: May 16-18 Five-Star Classic (Boston); June 8-9 in the Boston Shootout 16. California Team Select (Los Angeles, Calif.) ‚ (6-3) *NR Results: Lost to YOMCA, 57-55, in the semifinals of the Kingwood Classic; Beat Albany City Rocks, 58-53, in the quarterfinals; Beat Illinois Warriors, 64-49; Defeated St. Louis Blue; Beat Houston Gold. Tournament Finishes: Failed to advance past pool play at Boo Williams
Coach: Thaddeus McGrew
Starters: PG Jordan Farmer (6-2, SR, #10); WG Josh Shipp (6-4, SR, #22); G Gabe Pruitt (6-3, SR, #23); BF Amir Johnson (6-10, JR, #32)
Notes: Swift played on a bad foot at the Kingwood Classic, but you could hardly tell as re-emerged as a legitimate Top 25 player. Farmer was also superb and the savvy guard will soon choose between Arizona, UCLA, Florida and Gonzaga. Josh Shipp had a team-high 15 and Swift added 14 in the semifinal setback to YOMCA. Pruitt committed to USC earlier this week. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 17. The Family (Detroit, Mich.) - (13-3) *17 Results: Lost to Philly MJC, 72-64, in the semifinals of Spiece; Beat Cincinnati Black, 59-48, in the quarterfinals; Beat Hoosiers Stars, 32-15, in the Sweet 16; Beat Illinois; Defeated Compton Magic; Beat Spiece Top Prospects; Defeated Long Island Roadrunners; Beat Cleveland Basketball Club, 62-48, to win the Mustang Classic; Beat All-Ohio sophomores; Defeated All-Ohio Red; Beat Dayton Metro; Defeated Ohio Future Stars. Tournament Finishes: Boo Williams Silver Division quarterfinals
Coach: Durand "Speedy" Walker
Starters: WG Joe Crawford (6-4, 205, SR, #23); WG-WF Malik Hairston (6-6,
185, SR, #1); PG Chris Douglass-Roberts (6-5, JR, #31); C Jamal Locke (6-7,
SR)
Notes: Hairston has been one of the biggest surprises of the spring as he won tournament MVP honors at the Mustang Classic and also made the all-tournament team at Spiece. Hairston has become a hot commodity and is being looked at heavily by UCLA, Kansas, Ohio State, Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Missouri and others. Douglass-Roberts and Coleman have both played well so far this spring. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 18. Cleveland Basketball Club (Cleveland, Ohio) - (16-3) *15 Results: Beat Michigan Mustangs, 61-52, to win the Adidas Hoop Challenge (Ohio); Defeated Houston Superstars, 73-69; Beat TYD (N.Y.), 65-46; Beat Shane.com (Ohio); Defeated Uncommon People (Ind.); Beat Mahoning Valley All-Stars (Pa.); Lost to The Family, 62-48, in the title game of the Mustang Classic; Beat All-Ohio Red, 88-78; Defeated All-Ohio; Beat All-Ohio II; Defeated Team Detroit. Tournament Finishes: Semifinals of the Texas Classic; Finals of the Mustang Classic; Won the Adidas Hoop Challenge (Ohio)
Coach: Mike Duncan/Tony Brown
Starters: F Matt Terwilliger (6-9, 220, SR, #52); F Inbram Konte (6-10, SR,
#23); WG Justin Orr (6-4, 190, SR, #22); WF Brandon Ivery (6-7, SR, #21)
Notes: Cincinnati-bound point guard Jamar Butler averaged 18.5 points and 4.3 assists and shared tournament MVP honors at the Adidas Hoop Classic with Ivery, who averaged 17.9 points and 11.5 boards per game. Morrissey made his debut and put up 11.1 points per game in the tourney, but Duncan's club has been without Konte for the last two weeks because of school visits. Terwilliger, who averaged 13.1 points and 10.9 boards per game in the Hoop Challenge, was on an unofficial visit to Notre Dame and missed the Mustang Classic. Next Tourney: May 17-18 Cincinnati Select; May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 19. Georgia Stars (Adairsville, Ga.) - (20-2) *16 Results: Beat South Florida Heat to win the Silver Division at the Kingwood Classic; Defeated Old Gold Chicago in the semis; Beat Spiece Top Propsects; Defeated SE Texas All-Stars; Beat Houston Gold; Lost to First Class (Ill.); Beat Mid State Ballerz (Tenn.) Tournament Finishes: Lost to in the Boo Williams Silver Division semifinals
Coach: Norman Parker
Starters: G Paul Delaney (6-2, SR, #1); PG Ryan Lamb (5-10, SR, #3); BF
Ralph Jennings (6-8, SR, #33); C Justin Billings (6-9, SR)
Notes: Channing Toney, Andrew's son, averaged 19.2 points per game in Houston while Witherspoon added 18 per contest and Delaney chipped in with 17.5 per game. Toney has serious interest from Notre Dame, Georgia, Clemson, Arkansas and Florida State while Witherspoon is looking at Auburn, Georgia and some mid-majors. Look for Lamb, who averaged 8 points and 10 assists a game, to emerge. He missed the final two games with a severe ankle injury and is fielding some interest from Clemson, Mercer and Georgia State. Next Tourney: May 23-25 at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 20. Southeast Pump 'N Run (Huntsville, Alabama) - (3-1) *20 Results: Idle. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the first round of the Texas Classic playoffs
Coach: Mark Komara/Ronnie Stapler
Starters: G Glenn Miles (6-5, 190, SR, #1); WF Tyler Smith (6-6, 200, JR,
#34); Cyrus McGowen (6-11, 235, JR, #45); PG Jonathan Wallace (6-2, 175,
SR, #10)
Notes: Mike Williams, who took a visit to Texas last weekend, had a big tournament at the Texas Classic as Komara's crew won all three pool play games, but the loss of Glenn Miles to an ankle injury hurt Pump 'N run against the Arkansas Hawks, who were smoking from long range. Look for Cameron to return from a knee injury at the Bob Gibbons tournament, which should make things easier for Williams inside. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 21. Juice All-Stars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) - (5-1) *23 Results: Idle. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the semifinals of the Texas Classic.
Coach: Dwayne Morton
Starters: G Ramel Bradley (6-2, 175, SR, #33); G Kojo Mensah (6-1, 175, SR,
#23); F James Barrett (6-5, SR, #10); BF Sean James (6-9, SR, #12)
Notes: Obviously, this backcourt can hang with anyone - and it did in Houston. Telfair and Bradley combined for more than 50 against the Panthers, but it was James who held his own against the Atlanta Celtics formidable front line. Look for Vernon Goodrich, a Brooklyn native who will be playing with the World Wide Renegades, to play with the All-Stars at a few tournaments. Telfair is still among the best - if not the top - point guard in the class while Bradley is underrated and has flourished since attending IMG in Florida. The key is whether Morton can get enough from his guys up front. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 22. NC Gaters (Greensboro, N.C.) - *24 Results: Defeated Beach Ball Select (S.C.) in the title game to win the Beach Blast. Coach: Steve Shelton
Starters: WF James Mays (6-8, 195, SR, #4); G JamesOn Curry (6-2, 175, SR,
#24); PG Kenny Hunt (5-11, 185, SR, #1); WF-WG Jason Thompson (6-5, 190,
SR, #21)
Notes: Simmons has already committed to N.C. State and he put up 18 points and six blocks against Beach Ball. Curry is slated to attend North Carolina. Mays is a highly touted wing from Garner High, but the strength of this club is its depth and athleticism. Next Tournament: May 9-11 Southern Invitational (Charlottesville, Va.) 23. Portland Legends Elite (Portland, Ore.) - *NR Results: Defeated Howard Pulley Blue, 60-50, to win the Howard Pulley Invitational; Defeated St. Louis Eagles, 61-49, in the semifinals; Beat KC Rocktown, 64-50; Defeated Howard Pulley White, 59-41; Lost to St. Louis Eagles, 67-60; Lost to KC Rocktown, 65-59; Beat Minnesota Select, 63-58; Lost to Belmont Shore in the first round of the playoffs at the Kingwood Classic; Beat SA Rohawks; Defeated E&S (Texas). Tournament Results: Lost in the first round at the Kingwood Classic
Coach: Troy Berry
Starters: C Sam Rayburn (6-10, 250, SR); BF Ryan Coldren (6-7, SR); PG Jeremiah Dominguez (5-7, SR); WG/WF Erik Ainge (6-5, SR)
Notes: Leunen scored 20 in the win over the St. Louis Eagles and had 12 points and 10 boards in the title game at the Howard Pulley Invitation while the diminutive Dominguez led the team with 18 against Howard Pulley. Rayburn, who has already committed to Cal, remains out with an injury. The Legends came back strong in the playoffs in Minnesota after losing a pair of games in pool play. Next Tournament: May 24-26 at the Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 24. S.C. All-Stars (Los Angeles, Calif.) - (6-2) *22 Results: Lost to Nike Team Florida in the first round of the playoffs at Kingwood Classic; Beat San Antonio Flames; Defeated South Florida Heat Tournament Finishes: Lost in the quarterfinals of the Las Vegas Easter Classic
Coach: Pat Barrett/Reggie Theus
Starters: C David Burgess (6-10, 250, SR, #44); PG Vincent Oliver (6-2, SR,
#1); WF Marcel Jones (6-7, 205, SR, #33)
Notes: The team remained without its coach, Reggie Theus, so Barrett took over in Houston and was unable to lead the team past a talented Nike Team Florida squad. Afflalo, who committed to UCLA, still didn't look like himself as he's still recovering from an ankle injury. Jones showed that he's more than just a 3-point shooter while Burgess did a nice job in the middle. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) 25. Long Island Panthers (Long Island, N.Y.) - (18-2) *NR Results: Beat Montrose Christian to win a division title at the Charlie Weber (D.C.); Defeated Baltimore Bombers in the semifinals. Tournament Finishes: Lost in the quarterfinals of the Spring Fling (N.Y.);
Won American Divison of the Jam Fest (R.I.); Lost in the quarterfinals of the
Texas Classic; Won a division at Charlie Weber (D.C.)
Coach: Gary Charles/Khalid Green
Starters: PG Kashif Payne (5-7, JR); WF Kiwan Smith (6-7, SR); F Rashon Clarke (6-6, SR); C Joakim Noah (6-10, SR) Others: G Cameron Tyler (5-11, SR); G Kevin Spann (5-11, SR); G Dwayne Johnson (5-8, SR); G Cliff Clinkscale (6-1, SR); F Antonio Pena (6-7, JR); WG/WF Danny Green (6-4, SR); WF/WG Reed Witman (6-7, SR) Notes: Wright, who didn't play in the Charlie Weber tourney, is an underrated scoring point guard who finally gets a chance to step out of the shadows of Charlie Villanueva and Mike Jones from a year ago. He's being recruited by just about everyone in the Big East and North Carolina has gotten involved of late. Noah is an active, athletic big man who is getting better every tournament. He's also the son of the former tennis star, Yannick. Payne may be small, but he can run a club and Clarke plays much bigger and stronger than his 6-6 frame suggests. Next Tournament: May 23-25 Tournament of Champions (N.C.) Dropped OutNo. 10 Ft. Sooy No Limit (Urbana-Champaign, Ill.) Results: Lost to Philly MJC, 72-64, in the quarterfinals of Spiece; Beat Houston Westside, 79-77, in the Sweet 16 of the Spiece; Lost to Houston Select in the first round of the playoffs at the Kingwood Classic; Beat ABC (La.); Beat DFW (Texas) Tournament Finishes: Won a division at the Charlie Weber Spring Invitational
Coach: Verdell Jones
Starters: G Justin Cerasoli (6-4, 165, SR, #24); C Nick Yelovich (6-9, SR,
#44); WF Rodney Edgerson (6-6, SR, #31); G Brandon Lee (6-1, SR, #18)
Notes: Livingston didn't play much in the last two tournaments, but we're still bumping Ft. Sooy out. Summer basketball is all about injuries and missing guys, so that's no excuse. They'll get their chance to move back in the poll. No. 12 Illinois Wolves (Chicago, Ill.) Results: Failed to reach the Sweet 16 at Spiece; Lost to the Long Island Roadrunners in the first round of the Silver Division at the Kingwood Classic; Beat Team NCI (Texas): Lost to Nike Team Florida Tournament Finishes:
Coach: Troy Johnson
Starters: BF Ollie Bailey (6-7, 225, SR, #40); G Jaeh Thomas (6-2, 185, SR,
#34); WG-WF Frank Claire (6-6, SR, #22); F Gordon Watt (6-6, SR, #20)
Notes: Pruitt and Bailey form one of the top forward duos in the nation, but they have been inconsistent throughout the spring. In fact, it's been Watt and Claire who have been the team's most consistent players thus far. Next Tourney: May 23-25 Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions (N.C.) No. 19 Houston Hoops (Houston, Texas) - (12-4) Results: Lost to South Florida Heat in the quarterfinals of the Silver Division in the Kingwood Classic; Beat Florida Prepstars; Defeated KC Premiere; Beat Southpoint Shooters (Fla.); Lost to Texas Top Prospects. Tournament Finishes: Won the Las Vegas Easter Classic; Did not advance out of pool play at Boo Williams
Coach: Hal Pastner/Byron Gibson
Starters: WF Jawaan McClellan (6-6, SR, #44); WG/WF Matt Wheaton (6-6, SR,
#25); F Mike Nichols (6-6, SR, #21); C Kellen Hurd (6-7, SR, #42)
Notes: Gibson should return from a broken hand this weekend at Kingwood and he'll have some help with McClellan, who according to Pastner, has joined the team on a full-time basis. McClellan had 20 points and four trifectas in the title game against the Utah Bruins Gold in Vegas. Next Tourney: May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) No. 21 South Carolina Ravens (Columbia, S.C.) - (4-3) Results: Lost to Breakdown (Fla.) in the first round of the playoffs at the Kingwood Classic; Beat Blessed Maximum (Ind.); Defeated One Tough School (Calif.) Tournament Finishes: Silver Division quarterfinals at Boo Williams
Coach: Dion Bethea
Starters: WG Zam Frederick (6-1, 190, SR, #20); G Ronald White (6-3, 180,
SR, #23); BF Philip Merling (6-6, SR, #44); WF Josh Dollard (6-7, JR, #42)
Notes: The Ravens got knocked off by Breakdown in the first round, so we're going to bounce them out of the Top 25 until Dickey & Co. prove they are deserving of the honor. Dickey has played well in the first two tournaments and Frederick can light it up as he showed by knocking down 5 trifectas in one game. Next Tourney: May 16-18 Five-Star (Boston); May 24-26 Nike Memorial Day Classic (Ind.) 25. Alabama Lasers (Huntsville, Ala.) - (1-2) *25 Results: Idle. Tournament Finishes: Failed to advance past pool play at Boo Williams
Coach: Wig Pearson/Ronnie Flakes
Starters: F Richard Hendrix (6-8, JR, #33); PG Tank Beavers (6-1, SR, #23);
G Ron Steele (6-2, SR, #21); G Courtney Beasley (6-3, SR, #32)
Notes: We're giving the Lasers a mulligan in their first tournament. They were without their newest addition, Steele, for Boo Williams and his absence was apparent. White started the tournament slow and had just 4 points in the loss to the Ravens, but he had 17 points in the win over Kentucky and Hendrix added 16. Beavers scored 15 and hit four trifectas in the opening game of the tournament. These guys will be better next time out. You can count on that.
