MCALARNEY JOINS IRISH

By Rob Harrington

May 13, 2004

Notre Dame locked up its fourth commitment from the Class of 2005, getting 6-2 PG Kyle McAlarney from Staten Island (NY) Moore Catholic.

McAlarney doesn't have the national profile of Notre Dame's other recruits -- Luke Zeller, Zach Hillesland and Ryan Ayers -- but he was very high on coach Mike Brey's wish list.

Not a lot is known about McAlarney's game at this point, but he had begun to attract interest from other high-majors such as Georgetown, Stanford and N.C. State. He also posted big scoring numbers as a junior.

FRIARS ROAST BURCH

Former St. Bonaventure prospect Charles Burch has shifted gears and is now headed to the Big East. Burch, a 6-6 BF/WF from Marion (MA) Tabor who backed away from the Bonnies in the spring, will play his college ball at Providence.

Burch is small for the four and needs to improve his ball skills to play the three full-time, but he's a very hard worker who gets a lot accomplished thanks to his toughness inside and reliable scoring from 12 feet and closer.

He won't be an elite athlete in the Big East, but he certainly won't be a slouch in terms of quickness and leaping ability, either. What we like best is his consistency and willingness to do whatever it takes to win games.
