WILDCATS SNARE GUARD

By Rob Harrington

Many recruitniks focused their attention on the McDonald's All-American game this week, but plenty of other news came in from around the country.

Here's the latest:

Starting at Arizona, the Wildcats picked up a commitment from one-time Temple pledge Jesus Verdejo, a 6-3 WG who was a member of the Class of 2003 and then had a big year as a prep this season at Winchendon (MA) School.

At Colorado, the Buffaloes gained the services of Julius Ashby, a 6-9 BF from Marshalltown (IA) CC who backed out of a pledge to Indiana. Ashby isn't a big name on the juco scene, but he obviously comes recommended after getting at least two high-major scholarship offers.

Fresno (CA) CC PG Tryone Jackson is headed to Arizona State. Jackson, a 6-2 floor general, scored 24 points per game this season. He joins another touted juco, 6-7 forward Bryson Krueger, as recent Sun Devils recruits.

Jackie Butler, who at one time was considered one of the top five prospects in the Class of 2003 but progressively slipped as others caught him and he failed to improve, will not be attending Tennessee after all. Butler announced recently that he was exploring his pro options, but now it's official -- he's signed with an agent.
