TIGERS, ILLINI GET INSIDERS

Potential, not the present, is the key for 6-9 BF Raymond Sykes. Potential is exactly what Clemson saw in the Jacksonville (FL) Jackson stud, and now the willowy post has secured his college future.

Sykes' greatest attributes are speed and leaping ability. He lacks strength and skills right now, but in a couple years the Tigers' coaching staff hopes to develop him into a shot-blocker and transition scorer.

Previously, Sykes had drawn interest from LSU, Penn State, Texas A&M, Florida, Florida State and others.

ILLINI GET JACKSON

Illinois added serious muscle to its lineup in Charles Jackson, a 6-7, 260-pounder and erstwhile football player. Jackson chose the Illini over Penn State.

Jackson, a star at Buena Vista (GA) Tri-County, averaged 21 points and 15 rebounds per game last season. He impressed us during the spring and summer with his brute strength around the basket, though he did at times struggle against top athletes.

St. John's quietly added post help in the form of Tomas Jasiulionis, a 6-10 C from Richmond (VA) Trinity Episcopal. Jasiulionis picked the Red Storm over Clemson. ...
