SIGNING WEEK MOVES

April 17, 2008

The spring signing period has begun, and although most elite seniors signed back in November, there still are a handful of players -- some uncommitted all along, others newly freed after obtaining releases from their prior schools -- still set to decide.

The most anticipated decision was authored by top-five PA WG Tyreke Evans, who as expected committed to Memphis over Villanova, Texas and others. Evans was one of the very early poster boys for the Class of 2008, a role he never relinquished in scoring points at a furious clip both in high school and travel settings.

Evans projects as the next one-and-done guard for the Tigers, following in the footsteps of the outstanding Derrick Rose. What's different for Memphis, however, is the styles each of those players employs. While Rose tends to defer naturally, Evans looks to be more aggressive with his scoring. For that reason, we considered Rose a PG in high school and Evans a WG. In any case, Evans should enjoy big success next season.

HUSKIES GET OKWANDU

UConn landed a pledge from Charles Okwandu, a 7-1, 250-pound C from Harcum (PA) JC and native of Nigeria. Not known for his offensive prowess, Okwandu instead will be asked to provide support to the Huskies' rebounding and interior defense.

Importantly for UConn, Okwandu will have three years of eligibility in Storrs. He also considered Villanova and West Virginia prior to making his decision.

BEARCATS GAIN A BIG MAN

Cincinnati inked Miami-Dade (FL) JC product Steven Toyloy, a 6-8, 260-pound insider who went for 12 points and 12 rebounds per game last season. He isn't considered much of a threat as a scorer but is a tough rebounder and obviously has the size to compete right away in the Big East.

CLONES ADD A TRIO

In an attempt to raise the overall talent level within the program, Iowa State has added three players this spring. The most notable may be IA BF L.A. Pomlee, an athletic specimen who could emerge as one of the sleepers from the senior class.

He led Davenport Central to a runner-up finish within the state of Iowa this past season, averaging 15 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Joining Pomlee will be former Iowa recruit Jamie Vanderbeken, a 6-10 C at Tyler (TX) JC, and Marquette transfer guard Scott Christopherson, a noted shooter who will sit out next season and become eligible for 2009-10.

EVANS TO TERPS

Earlier this week, talented but troubled guard Tyree Evans pledged to Maryland. That commitment raised eyebrows around College Park, and not because anyone doubts the 6-3 WG's talent. A product of Motlow State (TN) JC, Evans was the one-time state player of the year in Virginia, scoring bushels of points thanks to a heady combination of athleticism and shooting ability.

The Evans express nearly derailed thereafter, however, as he became embroiled in legal troubles and also changed schools on a couple of different occasions. Now, having averaged 21 points a game this past season, the hope is that he has matured and put his troubles behind him, and if he has, he should become a fine contributor for the Terrapins.

TIGERS, BULLDOGS GET SIGNINGS

Clemson made a late offer that was accepted by Bryan Narcisse, a 6-7 BF at North Augusta (SC) High he's a good athlete and maybe even a little better student, carrying a 3.8 GPA.

Narcisse was regarded by most as a mid-major, yet he improved his standing after averaging 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game as a senior leading his club to a deep playoff run.

Meanwhile, not too far away at Georgia, the Dawgs added Ebuka Anyaorah, a 6-3 WG at Suwanee (GA) North Gwinnett, who averaged a whopping 27 points and eight rebounds a game as a senior.
