FLORIDA VS USA ALL-STAR REPORT

By Rick Staudt

March 25, 2008

Since the NCAA instituted a two all-star game limit for college recruits, it has become difficult for new events to garner some of the country's top talent. While the McDonald's and Jordan games always get the cream of the crop, the next tier of all-star games battle it out for top players with state and local games.

A new event this year featuring the top players in Florida against some of the nation's top players took place in Orlando this past weekend, and if the results from this weekend were any indication of future success, this event may become one of the top postseason events in the country very soon.

Put on by The Senior Showcase, not only is the competition at a very high level but the players are treated to an Orlando Magic game and introduced at half-time, an opportunity to participate in the shoot-around prior to the evening's Magic game, skill instruction from former NBA All-Star Dee Brown and a luncheon with guest speaker Nick Anderson of the Orlando Magic.

The roster for the USA All-Stars featured Wesley Witherspoon (undecided), Ryne Smith (Purdue), Travon Woodall (Pitt), Quincy Roberts (undecided), C.J. Williams (NC State), Travis Leslie (Georgia), Allan Chaney (Florida), Matt Humphrey (Oregon), Storm Warren (LSU) and Miles Plumlee (Stanford).

The Florida contingent was made up of Terrance Santil (VCU), Kevin Foster (George Mason), Dago Pena (Florida Atlantic), Kyle McClanahan (undecided), Jared Swopshire (Louisville), Miguel Paul (Missouri), P.J. Gaynor (Central Florida), Evan Ravenal (Boston College), Marcus Capers (Washington State), Steve Tchiengang (Vanderbilt), Zach Bailey (Tennessee Tech) and Luke Loucks (Florida State).

Florida led for much of the contest but never by more than 10 points. At the four-minute mark, Team USA finally managed to tie the score at 97. From there, Team Florida lost some of there composure, turning over the ball twice which lead to four points for Team USA. In the end, Team USA won the game 120-115, but the Florida contingent represented itself well.

For Team USA, Travon Woodall was named the MVP. The Pitt recruit from Jersey City (NJ) St. Anthony was tremendous all afternoon. He scored 22 points, played stellar defense and continuously found teammates for open looks. His three pointer gave Team USA the lead for good. The Florida fans walked away marveling at how good he could be for the Panthers.

Storm Warren of Team USA also made the all-event team. The Monroe (LA) Richwood native had 20 points on the day as he hit from mid-range, put back teammates' misses and scored in transition. His combination of strength and athleticism couldn't be matched by the interior players from Florida.

Fans of the Florida Gators were treated to a good showing by New London (CT) High BF Allan Chaney. He too made the all-event team with 15 points in the contest and displayed a nice variety of moves around the basket, as well as the ability to put the ball on the floor from the foul line and score. Chaney even knocked down a three in the contest, but it is doubtful that is what Billy Donovan wants out of him for SEC competition.

The final member of the all-event team for Team USA was Travis Leslie out of Decatur (GA) Columbia. An unparalled athlete, Leslie emitted several oohs and aahs when he finished in transition. While many of his 14 points came on the break, he did show improvement in getting to the basket off the dribble and knocking down mid-range jumpers. He committed to the Georgia Bulldogs this week.

As for the rest of Team USA, Witherspoon finished with 8 points, Roberts had 14, Williams had 6, Humphrey had 13 and Plumlee finished with 7. Smith just couldn't find his stroke as he went 0-4 from behind the arc and failed to score in the contest.

For Team Florida, their MVP was Jared Swopshire out of Bradenton (FL) IMG. We've always thought Swopshire was a very versatile performer, and he proved that notion again in this contest. He went 4 for 4 from behind the arc, scored inside off offensive rebounds, and got to the basket on the bounce. His length also allowed him to capture a few errant passes and turn those pilfers into points.

Kevin Foster of Lakeland (FL) Kathleen) also made the all-event team. Foster scored 16 points in the contest many coming in transition on feeds from high school teammate Miguel Paul. He also had some scores around the basket in traffic and displayed consistent range on his jumper out to 17 feet.

The final member of the all-event team was Zack Bailey of Hollywood (FL) Chaminade). His forte is attacking the basket and finishing over the bigs inside. While his zero-rotation jump shot isn't a thing of beauty, he did knock down two of four from behind the stripe as well as hit a couple of mid-range jumpers.

As for the rest of Team Florida, Pena finished with 8 points, McClanahan had 4, Paul had 2, Gaynor scored 13, Ravenal contributed 6, Capers added 13, Tchiengang chipped in with 6, Santil put in 5, and Loucks stepped up with 2 points but six very flashy assists.
