DEACONS SCORE WITH HARRISBy PrepStars.com staff
Wake Forest didn't have to look far for its latest commitment, keeping it local in getting Winston-Salem WG/WF C.J. Harris, who chose the Demon Deacons over finalists Clemson and Virginia Tech, as well as other high- and mid-major programs. Harris is a good all-around scorer who is comfortable shooting from the perimeter or attacking off the dribble. In fact, he's actually best as a slasher, and his leaping ability appears to have become more explosive over the past year. His performances against national competition by and large haven't been dominant, but he has proved he can play against blue-chippers and hold his own. Harris averaged 19 points, six rebounds and five assists per game as a junior for a very strong team. MORE ACC, OTHER PLEDGESRocked by the transfer of freshman big man Gus Gilchrist, Maryland scrambled late to find Steve Goins, a 6-10, 245-pound C from Chicago (IL) Curie. Goins is something of a project but does have height and the mass to compete against other high-major big men, so from here he'll mostly need to focus on adding skills and developing a more advanced feel for the game. ... N.C. State reached into the Class of 2010 for its latest commitment, from 6-0 PG Ryan Harrow of Marietta (GA) Walton. Harrow doesn't boast a big name but will have the opportunity to prove himself this month. ... Marquette made a late 2008 addition, securing a pledge from Liam McMorrow, a 7-0, 260-pound C from Durham College (CAN). McMorrow is a transfer who will sit out next season and suit up -- with three years of eligibility -- in 2009-10. McMorrow averaged eight points and seven rebounds per game last season. ... Oklahoma State gained a late addition as well in Malcolm Kirkland, a 6-8, 235-pound BF/C at Fort Smith (AR) JC. ...
