COMMITMENT CATCHUP

By PrepStars.com staff

May 7, 2008

So far this month, decisions by significant players affecting major college programs have continued to cascade down from the top. While there still is cleanup occurring within the Class of 2008, there also have been several pledges from the Classes of 2009, 2010, 2011 and, yes, 2012.

Among the most noteworthy stories was a trio of commitments taken by Kentucky. The Wildcats most recently reached into the rising sophomore class for Vinny Zollo, a 6-9 BF at Greenfield (OH) McClain who plans to transfer next season to a different high school.

That commitment followed the one made by Michael Avery, just an 8th grader in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The 6-4 Avery's pledge made national headlines not so much based on his ability, but his age. A lot obviously can happen between now and the beginning of the 2012-13 season, when Avery is set to join the UK program.

Meanwhile, a confirmed big-time talent also commitment to Kentucky: IN BF Domnique Ferguston. The slender big forward is an excellent athlete and increasing skilled scorer, and it's likely he'll enter the July evaluation period as a top-25 national prospect.

JONES FINALLY HAS DECISION

After various stops and fits, the recruitment of IL PG Verdell Jones has ended. The slender and tall floor general selected Indiana over Minnesota.

Jones averaged 18 points and seven assists (a very high number for a high school point guard) a game during his senior year, despite having to overcome a very thin (165-pound) frame. He'll obviously need to get stronger for college, but Tom Crean needed immediate help in the backcourt, and Jones should have a chance to play early.

IU also did work with the Class of 2009, getting MD/CT WG Maurice Creek over interest from several Big East and ACC programs, as well as other high-majors.

ANDERSON TO BADGERS

Touted WI C Evan Anderson picked Wisconsin over a host of high-major programs. Considered by many to be one of the top 25 prospects nationally in the Class of 2010, Anderson shows tremendous long-term promise and should become yet another in a growing line of high-quality big men at UW.
