MAJOR LATE-WEEK COMMITSBy PrepStars.com staff
There's been no shortage this week of major commitments, as more and more high-majors remove themselves from the recruiting board. Florida State picked up tough and aggressive GA BF Terrance Shannon chose the Seminoles over interest from Memphis, Georgia and others. Shannon tore his ACL prior to July and thus missed the evaluation period, but assuming full recovery -- and these days, that's typically a good bet -- he should become one of the better rebounders and garbage men in the ACC. More commitments: WA/NV WG/PG Avery Bradley: Committed to Texas. Comment: Bradley long had considered a lean for UT, so it was no surprise that he gave the Longhorns a pledge. That said, predictable or no, he's a terrific talent and will bring another potential star to Austin. Bradley was considered a lower top-100 prospect until the spring, when he blew up and now appears to be a sure-fire prospect for the McDonald's All-American Game next spring. MS C Rashanti Harris: Committed to Georgia State. Comment: Ticketed for Georgia State after failing to qualify academically last year, former 2008 product Harris certainly will be a great player if he can shore up his qualification issues. He's a beast inside who was one of the most improved big men in the country during his senior season. IN BF Stephan Van Treese: Committed to Louisville. Comment: Van Treese didn't have the kind of huge summer some expected of him in the early spring, but he did solidify his high-major standing and does possess some of the solid all-around skills exhibited by former Cardinal David Padgett. He'll need to become stronger to attain Padgett's level for U-L, but he has skills and intelligence that should enable him to develop at a nice rate for Rick Pitino's club. CA WF Tyler Honeycutt: Committed to UCLA. Comment: Honeycutt produces dramatic differences of opinion. Mostly, those on the East Coast didn't get great exposure to him, although we did see him at two different events in the spring and regard him as a top-100 talent. Others closer to his California homebase consider him an elite prospect, so that bears watching over the next few years. In the meantime, he'll definitely need to add strength before playing in a Ben Howland defense. NV BF Clarence Trent: Committed to Washington. Comment: Like Harris, Trent was a 2008 product who needed another year to work on his academics. Assuming he's OK to enroll in the fall at U-W, he'll bring tremendous straight-line athleticism and a solid body to Seattle. While he has improved his shooting range over the past year, we still prefer him as a BF, although he's mobile enough to perhaps defend certain wings.
