COMMITS CONTINUE TO TRICKLE

By PrepStars.com staff

June 24, 2008

There's been just a slight lull in the past week of the number of commitments being made, as many players either attend the final June camps or enjoy a final week of rest prior to the opening of the summer evaluation period on July 6.

That said, major decisions keep happening from coast to coast, arguably the most notable being that made by CA BF/C Greg Smith, who committed to Arizona. Smith is undersized for the post yet is very aggressive, strong and above-average in terms of quickness and leap. He's a borderline top-100 prospect who had attracted serious interest from Southern Cal, Kansas State, Washington, Fresno State and others, in addition to the Wildcats.

Smith also will move from Fresno (CA) Edison to Vallejo (CA) Bethel for his senior season.

Of course, given the public negativity affecting the Wildcat program lately, his pledge offered a salvo of good news and encouragement that the worst may be in the background.

ATKINS PICKS HOKIES

GA WG/WF Manny Atkins committed to Virginia Tech after a series of unofficial visits took him to Blacksburg, Clemson and Marquette. The 6-5 scorer at Tucker (GA) High had attracted offers from those schools and several other high-major schools.

Tucker has the ability to play at Tech early in his career. He has a guile to his game that's a little surprising, given that he isn't truly an explosive athlete. What he does is bury threes (his release is a little slow) and lull defenders asleep on the perimeter, before slashing to the rim for scores and fouls. He has top-100 potential in the senior class.

ELSEWHERE. ...

South Florida added serious pedigree in MI WG/WF Jordan Dumars, the son of former NBA star Joe Dumars and a fine player in his own right. Dumars isn't a great scorer or athlete but is an intelligent and versatile performer who, after a year or two to adjust to Big East competition, should be able to contribute. ... The long saga of IN/VA WG Eshaunte Jones appears to be over. Jones, who obtained a release from Oregon State, now is set to attend Nebraska for the 2008-09 season. He's a very dangerous (if also very streaky) shooter who can help the Huskers right away. ... Texas A&M added late 2008 help in the form of TX C James Blascyzk, a growing (up to 7-0), strengthening (up to 230) big man who is something of a project but has the obvious size to play the role of traditional college center. ...
