ROUNDUP: MANY MAJORS DECIDEBy PrepStars.com staff
Although official-visit season won't take place for several more weeks, the nearly-post summer pledges roll in at the end of July. Along with the new pledges, of course, are a handful of guys who chose to back off their early commitments and re-explore their options. Some of the recent players to remove themselves from the market were CA BF Greg Smith, CA WG Solomon Hill and IL BF Meyers Leonard (2010). CA C/BF Greg Smith: Committed to Fresno State, after backing off Arizona. Comment: Smith's departure from Arizona obviously hurts the Wildcats tremendously, a program that has been struggling of late to establish solidarity. Assuming Smith does follow through and signs with the Bulldogs in November -- he has reported academic issues -- he'll offer an immediate frontcourt boost. CA WG Solomon Hill: Committed to Arizona. Comment: Well, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you win. Arizona landed arguably a better prospect than Smith, drawing the nod from versatile and under-appreciated wing Hill. Though the Wildcats still require frontcourt help, Hill can defend multiple positions and is a solid, unselfish ball-handler with good strength and athleticism. Meyers Leonard, 6-10 BF/C, 2010, Robinson (IL) High: Committed to Illinois. Comment: Another thin face-up big man to join the Illini, Leonard is a very promising talent from the Class of 2010. We watched him extensively last week in Las Vegas, and his ability to stretch defenses with his jump shot or toss nifty outlet passes should make him an early contributor. That said, he'll certainly need to become stronger for the Big Ten. AL BF Josh Langford (2010): Committed to Louisville. Comment: Another rising junior to make a decision, Langford is a promising frontcourt talent who possesses both athleticism and burgeoning skills. He'll need to become more polished prior to taking the court for the Cardinals, but there's little reason to doubt he can play in the Big East. NJ WG/PG Tamir Jackson: Backed off a pledge to UAB. Comment: Jackson is one of the more improved guards on the East Coast, and as such he'll certainly receive heavy interest from Big East programs and others.
