On Friday afternoon, amid a maelstrom of reporters, TV stations and live internet streams bursting with traffic, the nation’s No. 1 senior, IA WF Harrison Barnes announced for North Carolina over Duke, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa State and UCLA.
The Barnes recruitment was among the most storied in recent memory, and no definitive leaks surfaced in the hours – or even minutes – prior to his announcement on live television.
The 6-7 wing announced via Skype and called the Tar Heels — which entered his recruitment later than his other finalists — as his winner. Barnes will join a UNC roster in need of a scorer, but one that also will include fellow 2010 wing recruit Reggie Bullock, along with point guard Kendall Marshall.
Barnes took official visits to each of his five finalists and an unofficial visit to Iowa State, and he previously had received scholarship offers from numerous other schools prior to whittling his list to six programs.
The Tar Heels now have arguably the top class in the nation, with signatures from the top banana and a total of three of the national top 20.
