ROUNDUP: MORE PROSPECTS DECLAREJim Dallke
Summer commitments continue to roll in as seven players have made their decisions since our last roundup posting. Beginning with Purdue, the Boilermakers gained a commitment from New Albany (IN) High native Donnie Hale. The 6-8 BF gives Purdue an upgrade in the frontcourt with his ability to block shots and rebound. Hale uses his mobility and speed to finish around the basket and handles the ball better than most big men he plays against. However, Hale will need to improve his explosiveness if he is going to finish over the bigger bodies in the Big Ten. Arizona added two more players to its roster by signing 2009 commits Derrick Williams and Lamont "Momo" Jones. Both players originally committed to play for Tim Floyd and USC, but after the controversial head coach resigned, both re-opened their recruitment. Williams is a 6-6 WF/BF from La Mirada (CA) High who will give the Wildcats a great deal of length next season. His wide frame and long arms allow him to finish around the rim, especially in transition. Williams will need to improve his left hand and his ball handling but head coach Sean Miller should feel very lucky to have grabbed such a quality player so late in the signing period. Jones on the other hand is a 5-11 PG from Mouth of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill. He is a solidly built floor general who can push the ball in transition and can pass the ball crisply and with precision. Jones makes Arizona the fourth team he has committed to after verbally committing to Louisville, Virginia Tech, and signing with USC. Williams and Jones join 6-11 C Kyryl Natyazhko, 6-6 WG/WF Solomon Hill, and 6-5 WF Kevin Parrom as Sean Miller signees for 2009. Over the weekend, Seton Hall landed 6-5 WF Fuquan Edwin from Paterson (NJ) Catholic. Edwin is a slasher who boasts a quick first step and an ability to get to the basket with ease. His offensive game needs to become more polished (especially his jump shot) but Edwin has a high motor and can rebound on both ends of the floor. Edwin is the only player thus far who has committed to play for the Pirates in 2010. Appalachian State also made news after gaining a commitment from 6-3 WG Nate Perry. The Landisville (PA) Hempfield native is a pure shooter who should give the Mountaineers significant help on the wing. At the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in May, Perry finished a game 12-15 from beyond the arc. He is the first 2010 commit for Appalachian State. The University of Virginia broke ground and landed Buffalo (NY) Nichols native Will Regan. The 6-8 C/BF must have liked what he saw in Charlottesville after playing on campus two weeks ago at the NBA Top 100 Camp. Regan is a great worker who fights for rebounding position, runs the floor, and chases down loose balls. He has a good perimeter game and is especially dangerous from the wing. While being an average athlete, Regan manages to hold his own inside and is an excellent offensive rebounder. Regan is a good start to Tony Bennett's 2010 recruiting class. Charlotte made news along the recruiting trail by snagging 6-3 WG Ge'Lawn Guyn from Georgetown (KY) Scott County. Guyn is a slasher who can blow by defenders with his quick first step. His speed allows him to create space beyond the arc, as defenders must respect his driving ability. He is a good (not great) shooter who can hit a three if he is open. Guyn's quickness also helps him defensively, allowing him to guard all three perimeter positions. He is Charlotte's first recruit for 2010. Prospect Sighting: Lance Stephenson surfaced on campus in Cincinnati. The last undecided top prospect in the Class of 2009, his decison is expected at any time. The extensive listing in the mix besides the Bearcats are: Kansas, Maryland and St. John's. Others frequently mentioned - Memphis, Arizona, Missouri, Pittsburgh and UNC-Charlotte. Stay tuned... |
