MORE COMMITMENT MOVEMENT

March 3, 2010

Southern Cal dipped into the Class of 2012 pool to land Larry Lewis, a 6-2 WG at Phoenix (AZ) Arcadia. Lewis made an unofficial trip to campus and decided to end his recruitment early. Though not yet a huge name nationally, he’s young for his class and has plenty of time to work out any kinks.

Lewis averaged 24 points a game this season, so obviously he can put the ball in the hole. He also earned all-conference honors on the defensive side of the ball.

BARON PULLS A RARE SWITCH

It’s entirely common these days for recruits to back off a college commitment, but backing off a college commitment when their father is the head coach? That’s unprecedented.

But that’s happened with Billy Baron, the 6-1 PG at Worcester (MA) Academy who had pledged to his father (Jim Baron), head coach at Rhode Island, before rescinding that pledge and opting instead for Virginia.

To the family’s credit, everyone appeared to handle the situation with maturity and perspective. Truth is, Baron likely is good enough to help the Cavaliers, and he definitely had the talent to play in a major conference.
