COSTELLO TO TAKE ACTION TO MSU

Rob Harrington

Michigan State is hammering things out on the recruiting trail these days. The Spartans obviously worked with extreme efficiency in July, seeing the right games at the right times and solidifying relationships to the extent they could extract multiple commitments in the two weeks following the summer evaluation period.

The latest is Matt Costello, the 6-8 junior BF at Bay City (MI) Western, who was outstanding during the summer for Dorian’s Pride. We first watched Costello at the Adidas Invitational in early July, and lived up to the advance billing we’d heard on his behalf.

Costello told us there that he hadn’t yet been offered by Michigan State but that he expected one was forthcoming. Additionally, he said he’d wait to commit unless it was “blatantly obvious” which school he wanted to attend.

Here’s our scouting report on him from July:

”Another Class of 2012 product who grabbed our attention was Matt Costello of Bay City (MI) Western. The 6-8 junior BF with the Dorian’s Pride 16s is a solidly built forward who isn’t overpowering now but has the kind of frame — including strong calves — that suggest he can become a power player. Costello definitely isn’t shy of contact and uses high shoulders and strong hands to pull down traffic rebounds.

Though not a great athlete, he runs well and on one play exploded out of a baseline spin move for a slam. He’s capable and willing of playing with his back to the basket, but he’s even better working the high post as a jump shooter and sharp passer. He also can take a couple dribbles to create higher percentage scoring opportunities. When rebounding on the defensive end he makes a quick outlet pass to start the break, and he’s quick enough off his feet to block an occasional shot. He’s definitely a national-level prospect and worthy of the high-major attention and offers he’s receiving (see below).”
