IF SCORING IS WRONG, DON’T SIGN BOATRIGHT

One of last weekend’s most explosive backcourt scorers was IL PG Ryan Boatright. Boatright at times was a dominant presence on the floor, and in three of his five camp games he scored at least 18 points, and his points per game average placed him at No. 6 at the camp.

Boatright is a smallish guard who nevertheless succeeds based on his quickness and ability to shoot the ball effectively to three-point territory. Though not a classic playmaker, he definitely handles and passes plenty well enough to spend his college years at point guard.

Though Boatright certainly performed well at the NBA Camp, he already had been receiving heavy attention from college programs.

”My list is real long,” Boatright said. “It’s West Virginia, Wake Forest, Miami, Kentucky, K-State, DePaul, Baylor and Tennessee. I’ve got offers from Miami and the old staff at Wake Forest had offered me, and Tennessee wants to see my transcript.”

Boatright definitely has high-major talent, and he possesses a strong idea about his ideal fit at the next level.

”I’m too small to play in the halfcourt game, so I need to be able to run up and down,” Boatright said. “There’s really no pressure on me to stay home or anything like that, either, so I’m just looking for a good coach who can help me get to the NBA level.”

We and others primarily consider Boatright a scorer, but he wants to force a reevaluation of his image.

”I score when I need to like for my high school team, but I’d really like to be a feeder,” he said. “That’s one thing to think about for colleges, and also I’m thinking about what other players sign with schools and how I fit in.”

Boatright tours with Derrick Rose Express and will attend the Super Showcase, among other events.
